DI SLTPN BENGKULU: SEBUAH STUDI DESKRIPTIF DAN EVALUATIF SafnilAbstract: This study aims at investigating and evaluating the implementation of communicative English teaching at Government junior high schools in Bengkulu city based on the theory of communicative foreign language teaching. The population of this study is 200 English teachers from two junior high schools in two different clusters (SMPN 2 and 6). The population was divided into two clusters: medium and low qualities, as the schools’ characteristics are rather heterogeneous. Data were obtained from interviews and classroom observation checklists. The results of study showed that: a) the English teachers’ knowledge on communicative language teaching was fairly good although there were some variations particularly for definition and opinion on its features; b) there were also variations on its implementation in the classroom; and c) the English teaching at the junior high schools could be said as fairly but not yet qualitatively communicative. Thus, it is necessary to conduct a qualitative study. Key words: communicative language teaching, integrated language teaching
