Zaenab Hanim
Abstract: This research is aimed at exploring a teacher’s perception of the perspective implementation of cooperative learning (CL) in mathematics teaching at primary school and the students’ responses towards CL implementation into their own mathematics program in the class. This is an action research with three cycles on one teacher and 30 students. Data are collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, teacher’s journal, and analytic memos. It uses a qualitative research procedure and analysis to gather teacher’s and students’ verbal protocols when using CL to solve mathematic problems in the research processes. The research findings shows that (1) both the teacher and students have positive perceptions of using CL in their own class; (2) the teacher’s positive perception enables her to structure CL appropriately, increase students’ learning motivation, help them solve mathematics problems, and improve their mathematics skill. One of the implications of this study is that the teacher has to change her paradigm of the mathematics teaching and emphasize teaching and learning practices which concern with students’ various capabilitiesKey words: cooperative learning, students’ attitudes, collaborative action research.
