PEMBELAJARAN KOOPERATIF DALAM PENGAJARAN MATEMATIKA

Abstract: Students’ competence in mathematics is still considered low and becomes one of the main academic problems. This problem  is shown  through students’ low learning achievement in mathematics from elementary  to high school levels. The problem is related to mathematics learning process which is not interactive and creative in classical teaching. It is simply caused by the teachers who cannot implement the basic conceptual mathematics in a big class. Therefore, cooperative learning (CL) was chosen as an effective method for the improvement of  mathematics learning. Besides, action research was used as a catalyst  to improve the teacher’s understanding and ability of implementing CL, such as the ability of motivating students to learn, the ability of structuring CL, and the ability of assessing the process of CL. Data were collected through  observation and interviews with the teacher and students. The research findings have shown that the teacher gradually  improved the ability of using CL by which the students  improved their academic achievement  better than the use of conventional teaching. The implications of the research oblige the teacher to change the roles  and practices into more impressed and interesting  mathematics instruction. The research finding is also implied on  the students’ academic achievement and attitudes in social values.
