The process of the
Italian Glazing Technique

1.

1.   In this first stage of the bear, the canvas is first painted with a light red overall underpainting.  The bear is sketched in with the brush using a mixture of green and purple (this mix appears almost black).   A suggestion of the background is sketched in with darker reds, with light blue for the tree trunks.

2.

2.   For the darkest tree areas, a mixture of red and blue are used to sketch in those areas using a brush.   These first two stages of the oil painting is actually done in an upside-down manner, to start painting forms using brushstrokes  (without the use of any any pencil or charcoal guidelines).

3.

3.   Greens are added in light and darker mid-tone ranges in the background.  Blue with a touch of red was layered onto the bear to start layers of colors on the bear.  The foreground shows the foliage roughly sketched, leaving reds to peek through from the first layer.

4.

4.   A layer of red was layered onto the bear to deepen the color of his fur coat.  Accurate colors of the head has begun, and Winsor green mixed with  other colors create a variety of greens  added to the foliage.

5.  The final layer shows a pattern of  highlights added to the foliage in the foreground to draw the viewer's eyes towards the face of the bear, and with final highlights on the bear and the foreground rock.
