Which accompanist do you think he works best with?: i love both Julius Drake and Graham Johnson, but i think, that his work with Drake is more intensive because they become an unity (my english is horrible, i'm sorry) when they make music (SCHUBERT !!)

I first heard Ian Bostridge on the Schuber-CD and was totally impressed! In my opinion his voice and exspecially his sense for interpretation can not be compared with any other classical singer. From this time on, I bought evry CD I could get and evry tim I'm surprised how deep the interpretations and the music as a whole can be. I made my first "live-experience" in 1999 at the "Schubertiade" in Lindau/Germany. The programm included Schubert-songs (the ultimative Erlkönig!) and also Hugo Wolf-songs. It was great to her, that his voice sounds live as wonderful as on the CD-producti ns in the studio. And it also was interesting to see him singing. (Everytime I see him on a picture or something like that, I have to think on an Aria he produced in 2000 on a Bach-CD: "Ich armer Mensch, ich Sündenknecht". That's how hr looks like.) So there's only one think to add: For me he's the Orpheus of the new century.

Last night, 10/27/2000, I heard him in concert at Founders Hall in the Performing Arts Center of Costa Mesa, Orange County, CA. The venue was small, 350 seats--filled to capacity, naturally. He was accompanied by Julius Drake and did Schubert and Wolf. Wo ! I was mesmerized. I had no idea thatwhat I heard on the disk was as intensely produced. He was like a wound up spring. I was so thrilled to have had the opportunity to hear him. Especially in such an intimate setting. He did four encores and I was delig ted. Thanks for the website. I heard Bostridge last evening at Founders Hall, Orange County Performing Arts--with Julius Drake. Only time I've heard him "live," and the recital was magnificent. Half Schubert; half Hugo Wolf. As a vocal accompanist, I have played all of that material at one time or another. It's all deadly difficult, and this pair presented it in an magical evening of music. Stunning!

I find it difficult to believe that Mr Bostridge is as straight as a flagpole as you suggest(siehe "To lie flat on the back....." from the abovementioned disc), though really that is neither here nor there. What an incredible sense of feeling this guy's oice conveys! I cannot wait for him to assume Sir Peter Pears' roles in Britten's operas, and transform them as he did Donne's sonnets.

Did you knowthat I met him? I sing in a children's choir which performed the Britten with him. We met the soloists backstage and he was very nice! I heard Ian Bostridge do the Winterreise in Amsterdam in February, and I was simply stunned. I think it was the most amazing concert I have ever attended in my LIFE. He managed to keep the tension running all through the Winterreise (even when he turned r und for a sip of water the audience hardly dared to sigh!). I do not think his voice is very special, but what he does with it is truly amazing...His interpretation of the Winterreise was very bold (sometimes bitter even), and it made me view the Winterre se in a completely different way....Also after the recital I simply didn't feel the need to talk to other people any more, and neither did the rest of the audience. Everyone just shuffled out very demurely and quietly. So thank you Ian, wherever you are, or a very inspiring evening (where in fact I also learned an awful lot about singing!). I'm very much looking forward to the 16th of April, when Ian will be doing the Evangelist in Bach's St. John's Passion here in Amsterdam.... I'll be there!!!!!

Wow, what a glorious voice!! I have played my Christmas present CD (An English Songbook) almost continuously since I got it and it just gets better and better. Listen to "Silent Noon" with headphones on and you are right there in the summer meadow with im! Can't recommend this CD highly enough. Saving up to buy Dichterliebe next. He has managed to break my previous obsession with Glenn Gould (Goldberg Variations in particular) and that's quite an achievement!

I first came across Mr Bostridge when teaching a course on the metaphysics and epistemology of witchcraft. His scholarly work is superb and, if this guest book is any indication, largely neglected by his fans. I have since read several articles by him and continue to be impressed. (As The Economist pointed out, so much for the old saying 'Dumb as a tenor'.) I admire his singing very much but know little about music. But I fear that when the music world gained a great tenor the history and philosophy world ost a scholar. True fans: read the book (Witchcraft and its Transformations). It is expensive to buy but can be found in any university library. What did that mean, by the way, about 'what is your quest'?

At the age of twelve I fell desperately in love with Ian when I saw him at a concert in 1992 - incidentally, it was his first performance with Julius Drake. Since then I've followed his career closely (the only good aspect of living in England), attending countless concerts and operas, buying as many CDs as I can afford and even being lucky enough to meet him several times. After seeing him at this year's Aldeburgh Festival I can assure any cynics that his voice has developed and matured whilst still retai ing the essentially ethereal quality which makes it so attractive. Hopefully I'm going to see him at Birmingham in December - his reign over the concert halls of Europe continues unabated. Long live Ian.

His voice is just incredible! But I have to agree: He has to take care! I heard him in Lindau in May - and it was an unbelievible performance. Same in Bonn a week later (especially "Winter Words"!). Then I saw him in Munich in July. And to me his voice so nded rather tired. In two weeks time I will listen to his Henze world premiere in Köln - we will see. Nevertheless - I just adore him!

I'm so happy!I actually found you! All right, here is my story: I was flipping through the TV channels several months ago -by the way, I'm an American, can you tell?- and I came to the Ovation network, a channel dedicated to the arts. Onscreen was what looked like a music video- high production values, a brooding but nteresting interior set, and young man in an historical costume, singing- but the music was classical. I was fascinated. I continued watching, and realized that the man's voice was unbelieveable. I had never heard such a wonderful tone and interpretatio . I watched the entire video, which was an hour and a half long, and turned out to be a version of Shubert's The Winter's Journey, with Julius Drake accompaning. When the show was repeated later in the day I had the presence of mind to record it. I have watched it again and again now and am continually astounded by Iam Bostridge. He is amazing! Ever since then I have been searching all over to find info about him and disks he has made. I didn't start with the Internet until now, so that's why it took me so long to find you.

I'm posting again to heartily endorse Bostridge/Johnson's take on the Donne Sonnets, op. 35 by Britten. Simply the most powerful singing I've heard our boy do, and of course the playing is superb. I think Ian's voice is perfect for Britten; his break is s clean and under control, much like Pears, and the poems scream with sadness and beauty. Buy it. Buy two copies, actually.

I believe Ian Bostridge is the tenor of our generation. His voice is very expressive, beautiful and intimate, he sings from his heart and from mind too. He is educated and really knows what he sings, this is essential in music especially with the romantics. Bostridge does seem to have very special and unique voice, the cleanest and yet most expressive tenor that I think I have ever heard. I will hope he makes it to Chicago soon so I can hear the live voice. Aside from the Muellerin, I have heard only the Sc umann recital and Nyman's Noises, Sounds, & Sweet Airs (surprise: I like it). I look forward to his Schubert recital due out imminently -- and I envy those in the UK who undoubtedly have many more chances to hear this guy.

I first saw Ian Bostridge playing Peter Quint in Britten's "Turn of the Screw" with the Royal Opera and have since seem him as Tamino in Magic Flute with English National Opera and in recital at the Wigmore Hall in London. All fabulous! I did tape the C annel 4 programme Natalie but my copy is a PAL VHS which you can't play on NTSC equipment - don't despair though! I just found out it's due for a Home Video release!

I am a great fan of Christoph Pregardien; I think he's the greatest established lieder tenor singing today. I think there is a crop of very interesting rising lieder singers whose carriers ought to prove very interesting (for us) and successful for them. erhaps Bostridge's time is already here. Matthias Görne, Hanno Müller-Brachmann, Pregardien is obviously there already.

Hi, Natalie! First of all, congratulations for this page! I agree with you that Ian Bostridge has aa special, almost heavenly gift for singing. He is undoubtedly the tenor with the most beautiful and sweetest voice ever heard. I had the opportunity to lis en to him only a couple of days gago (12th May 1998)and his performance was stunning. Everybody in the theatre went wild with excitement (Pérez Galdós Theatre, Gran Canaria, Spain)and we all came out with the impression that he is definitely one of the gr atest voices at present. I heard Ian Bostridge in concert about 2 years ago and was stunned. I spoke to him - and he moaned that he had a throat infection so thought the concert had been rubbish. I disagree strongly with that. He really was stunning! I went to hear the music (Die Winteriesse), but came back having heard the singer. I was very impressed.
