Swing Band

In 1995, the Southern Maryland Swing Band was formed to help the local community celebrate the 50th anniversary of D-Day. That was ten years ago... and in 2005 the band continues to enjoy playing musical styles ranging from Swing to Rock to Latin.

What is a "Swing Band" you ask? The Southern Maryland Swing Band is based upon the "classic" big bands of the 1930s and 1940s. Normally there are five saxophones, four trombones, four trumpets, and the rhythm section (piano, guitar, bass, drums and vocal). The Swing Band plays a wide variety of titles from classics of the 1930s to disco tunes of the 1980s. Here are but a few of the titles available...

A-train String of Pearls  Once in a While
Allegheny Moon All of Me  Blues Skies
Jump, Jive 'n Wail Nearness of You Satin Doll
La Bamba  Little Brown Jug Moten Swing

The Swing Band is comprised of musicians from all walks of life: engineers, teachers, plumbers, and retired professional musicians. Over the years, the Swing Band has played at Veteran's Day celebrations, birthday parties, wedding anniversaries, parties, weddings and fundraisers.

"Swing" music (or music of the big band era) has made a resurgence recently thanks in part to bands like Big, Bad Voodoo Daddy and musicals like Swing! So come out and enjoy the music...
