Level 3 Example

Read a book. Book a suspect.

In this case book can be a noun or a verb.

She likes exciting men.

In this case exciting can be a verb or an adjective.

Real life situation which occurred once. A user fills in all information on an editable form, then presses "Submit". The information is displayed on a screen. A button appears that says "Correct ?".

Pressing the button means (A) That the information is correct and that the user agrees to proceed. (B) That the user wishes to go back and correct the information?

Level 3 requires that a word maps into one and only one meaning.

Level 3 is where the mechanical aspects of language stop and the world view begins. World view is used in the field of robotics programming languages to describe a connection between ones and zeros in a computer and the world that we live in.

Gorbiel 1.0 World View mapping

aeiou - stand alone sounds (aka vowels)

bcdfghk - secondary consonants (cannot be used to start a word)

lmnpstv - primary consonants

Physical Aspects of the World View

l - Terra (solid)

m - Aura (gas)

n - Aqua (liquid)

p - Ignis (transition)

required fields from, to, optional fields time

s - Human (not physical) Qualities

t - Non-Human (not physical) Qualities

v - grammar

This required fields mapping will later allow higher levels of the language architecture to function.

Long Winded Explanation of the concepts used to map human qualities in Gorbiel 1.0:

The first question that an artificial language designer should always ask is do any natural languages already have a solution for the problem at hand? In the case of the world view, the answer is yes.

Latin, a language currently used only in academia, presented a world view in terms of four elements. Terra (solid), Aura (gas), Aqua (liquid), and Ignis (energy). This is a good start that will be used by Gorbiel 1.0 to define the physical aspects of our world view.

The United States National Science Foundation (NSF) is funding (taxpayer has too much money) a study to document the dead or dying languages of the world. Nowhere in the charter of this study is the mention of artificial language design mentioned. Too bad. As Hemmingway once wrote, "do not ask for whom the bell tolls, it tolls for the". Or something to that effect. Instead of studying other people's languages in an attempt to reduce the effect of a language holocaust caused by the English language the NSF would do better to improve the efficiency and quality of its own language, English, if'n it is at all possible.

Anyway, to make a long story short, the first question that an artificial language designer should always ask is do any natural languages already have a solution for the problem at hand? The Eagles once had a song titled, "the Greeks don't want no freaks". An idea that the Greeks had can be adapted to use in the case of mapping human non physical qualities (s).

To understand the difficulty of adequately mapping this particular aspect of language consider this analogy. On the internet one occasionally meets a WTF. The picture looks like it might be a guy cross dressed or after a formaldehyde operation. But it's not clear. It might just be a butt ugly woman. OK, so you think you'll ask the person, are you a man or a woman? So you start chating with a UFO like this online. What in the English language do you ask such a person to find out if it is really a man or a woman? Were you born female and are you currently female? Fine, that works, but to a point. You get the answer that she is and was female, 100% certain. Whew, for a moment there you were wondering about this one. But you double check if you read the words correctly, and yes, she claims and says she's female, but it turns out that is only her interpretation of what she is, not what she really is, a he. He he, good thing you double checked:) And here-in lies the problem. The English language does not have the proper words to use to properly define WTF it is that you're dealing with on the other end of the line, a man or a woman.

That's where the Greek ethos, logos, and pathos comes into play. The Greeks don't want no freaks. And here is how they weeded them out. Logos is what the doctor specified the person to be scientifically on the birth certificate. Pathos is what the person feels like he/she is. Ethos occurs when the logos and pathos are clearly established.

Take Juicy on the internet, for example. He was born JC, with a weenie, making him a male (logos). He chopped it off and fed it to some dog because he always felt like he was a she, a woman (pathos). Now he is a she-it.

In contrast the author of this text, according to the doctors at birth was a man (logos) feels like a man (pathos) and is established to be a man (ethos).

Now on the surface this may seem like a trivial problem. Who cares if a man is a man or a woman is a woman? However allowing humans to administer the vagrancies of interpretation of documents written in natural languages can lead to unexpected consequences which are serious.

According to the high priests of Islam homosexuality is a crime punishable by death. And so it is in Iran (Persia). Yet if a man chops off his weenie then according to the high priests he is no longer a homo. So what ends up happening in Tehran is that dudes chop off their you know what, put it in a jar of formaldehyde over the fireplace, and go on their merry way. I suppose the Koran figures that if they do not have anything to pack fudge with they cannot be fudgepackers:) Seriously, people on this earth today loose their penises because of deficiencies and failings caused by language interpretation. That is no laughing matter:)

A blond mother adopts a black child. The baby is not physically hers because the DNA does not match (logos). She feels like his mother though (pathos). She has not established (ethos) as a mother.

Can a woman with no kids that is past menopause join Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD)? Good question, what does their constitution state? Does mothers refer to a group of women with children (logos)? Does mothers refer to a group of women who feel they are mothers of children (pathos)? Can a guy on a Harley feel like he is a mother against drunk driving (pathos)? Does one have to be a female with children and feel like a responsible parent to join (ethos)?

What is an American? A person can be a citizen but not feel loyal to this country. Recently cases came up where US citizens are involved in terrorism directed against the United States. How can this be? They are an American by logos but not an American by pathos. There are many illegal immigrants working the kitchens in Los Angeles who feel the opposite. They are not American by logos but are American by pathos. Some say that a true American is one who has citizenship and feels like an American (ethos). Ethos establishes the relationship between logos and pathos. There are really only four permutations. 00, 01, 10, and 11. A citizen, feels American. A citizen, does not feel American. Not a citizen, feels American. Not a citizen, does not feel American.

00not ethos 01logos not pathos 10pathos not logos 11logos and pathos = ethos

The Greeks used the concept of ethos, pathos, logos in the field of debate and persuasion. OK, fine. But Gorbiel 1.0 kind of sort of hijacked the essence of the concepts and use them in a different manner in artificial language design. Do not confuse the kind of ethos, pathos, logos you see on this page with the official explanations of the words.
