A stalagmite in the famous Wookey Hole caves is known as the Witch of Wookey.
Long ago, the Witch lived in the caves with her two familiars - a goat and its kid.
Although she was wicked and spiteful, she had not always been that way.
It was said she had once been crossed in love and that ever since she had shown vindictiveness
to all the villagers of Wookey, and was especially spiteful to lovers.
A local monk had taken holy vows after the witch had spoilt his own romance. He
had planned to marry a girl from Wookey, but the witch had put a spell on their forthcoming
wedding and wrecked it.
When the people of Wookey appealed to the Abbot of Glastonbury to rid them of the witch,
this particular monk was sent to the cave to confront her.
As soon as she saw him, she tried to flee. But he managed to sprinkle her with holy water
and she was instantly turned to stone. And there she stands to this day, petrified on the
bank of the River Axe in the Great Cave at Wookey Hole.
( Fact : Over 100 years ago, a skeleton of an old woman was found in the caves, with a polished alabaster ball nearby. Could this have been the Witch of Wookey ? )
