MUSIC IN THEORY AND PRACTICE VOL. I. Boston: McGraw Hill Music Theory is the study of the elements of music: Melody, Rhythm, and
Harmony. This course will teach the student the basic structures of music;
and introduce the student to the compositional devices of music which
composers use to write music. COURSE OBJECTIVES: Understand the use and importance of the scale in music composition. Identify scales, intervals, triads, and their tonal qualities. Understand the use of, and be competent at harmonizing a melody with the
I, IV, and V chords. Write a simple ABA style composition COURSE REQUIREMENTS: All students will participate in all the experimental composition projects
during classes and assigned for homework. All students must attend all classes unless excused, and must complete all
homework/class assignments. EVALUATION: Grades will be based on your performance on three or four written test
grades (designated project grades will also be test grades), worth 50% -
70% of your 9wks / final grade. A final exam will be worth 20% of your
final grade. The last 10% - 50% will be based on your homework, individual
projects, and class work projects.
