Elgar Conducting.

Elgar is probably the first major composer to have recorded many of his own works. He made his first recording in January 1914 using the early 'acoustic' recording technique in which the sounds had to be channelled down a large horn to activate directly a cutting tool placed against the blank rotating disk.

In 1926 the newer 'electric' system of recording was introduced in which the use of microphones and an amplification system gave greater fidelity - although the recordings were still limited to 3 to 4 minutes per side!

In November 1931 the new studios of the Gramophone Company (E.M.I. / His Master's Voice) were opened at Abbey Road, London, and Elgar conducted at the opening ceremony.

This film was made at about that time.
