Luo

The Luo is the
gong, and is hit by a wooden and flat stick. It was originally
known as "Jin". In the olden days, the Luo was stroked
to signal retreat in the battlefield. During the Song Dynasty,
the Luo was incorporated into Chinese folk music. During the Yuan
Dynasty, the Luo was used in Zaju, or Chinese drama. In modern
China, the Luo is used by street peddlers to get attention. The
Luo is also an important instrument in the Chinese orchestra, and
is used especially in triumphal or festive music.
