Sanxian
The name Sanxian originated fron the Yuan Dynasty (1280-1368). It is also know as "Xianzi". It is a long-necked, three-stringed instrument with a snake skin membrane stretched over its cirucual soundbox. The Sanxian soloist plucks its strings with either a plectrum or with plastic fingernails attached to his fingers. It is used to accompany Chinese operas, in ensemble, and even in playing solos.
Its origin can be traced back to BC 214 when the Qin Emperor conquered the six countries and unified China. In the midst of building The Great Wall of China, to kill his boredom, the early version of Sanxian was born.
The three strings of the Sanxian are tuned to G, D, G. Its sound is unique and if listen carefully, its low pitch sounds like a old man humming a tune, its high pitch sounds like a young girl singing a song.
Popular pieces include The Big Wave over the Sands.
