Tuba
The most recent member of the brass family is the tuba. It was first built for a Prussian military band in 1829 to replace the unreliable ophicleide as a bass instrument. News of it travelled quickly to France, where Berlioz recommended replacing the ophicleide in his Symphonie Fantastique with a tuba.
Although tubas of many sizes and designs have been built according to the varied requirements of local conditions, they have not made their name as soloist. The first bass tuba concerto, by Vaughan Williams, appeared in 1954.
