Xiao
About 70 cm long
and made of bamboo, the Xiao has the blowing hole at the edge of
the closed upper end, five holes on the front side and one hloe
at the back to control the tone. It is held vertically, like a
recorder. The Xiao was already usd in accompaniment, ensamble and
solo during the Western Jin Dynasty (265 - 316 AD). Its timbre is
soft, clear, sweet and mellow.
Famous pieces for the Xiao include Plum Blossom, composed during Eastern Jin Dynasty (317 - 420 AD).
