We

alone, we are nothing.
together, we think we are something.
through our squinted eyes, the bit of world we see
is made up of other people and what they want us to be.
we may not do anything that is not approved by the rest.
images and interests do not exist unless they pass this test.
it is too much work for us to decide for ouselves who we are,
so we find someone to follow; then we follow them much too far.
we aren't simply humans, no longer do we exist as you and me,
now we are an army of clones, also known as we.
as we drag ourselves through life in a straight, single file line,
we laugh together, think together, convinced we are one of a kind.
if we meet a someone, a soul that is independent and free,
we taunt them, tease them, chide them... because... they still are a me!
we do not decide what our future holds; we just let someone lead the way.
in our lives we are merely actors, acting in someone else's play.
