Children and Internet Safety

If you have teens please read this.
I am writing this because there are a lot of teens and young kids who are getting hurt by online preditors. If you have a teen please tell them to be careful when they are online. They are in more danger of getting hurt by preditors. They are more likly to go in chat rooms or make a Myspace page. They feel that they in safe and some believe the lies that child molesters tell them. Have you ever seen To Catch A Preditor. They are almost always looking for 12 to 15 year olds. You might think that boys are safe but that is not the case. What can you and your teens do to be safe online. First you need to tell them that they are not allowed in chat rooms. They are in the most danger in chat rooms. Alot of offenders are in chat rooms looking for them. Alot of pediphiles lie about everything just so they can try to meet your kid. They are smart and know how to get kids to tell them things that seem innocent and harmless but could be very dangerous. Tell them they can only chat on yahoo with friends from school, your neighborhood or church. Keep walking by when they are online. They maybe less likely to talk to people they don't know if they know you are watching. BE AWARE IF THEY MINAMIZE THE SCREEN WHEN YOU COME INTO THE ROOM OR IF YOU SEE POS. POS MEANS PARENT OVER SHOULDER. THAT TELLS THE OTHER PERSON NOT TO SAY ANYTHING YOU MAY NOT LIKE. JUST REMEMBER PREDITORS ARE OUT THERE LOOKING FOR OUR KIDS. You should also be aware that kids can text, read emails and chat using yahoo or msn messenger on most cellphones.

If you made or are going to make a website for your kids please read this. I am amazed at the amount of information I find on some family made sites.

As a parent I find the internet as a wonderful tool. I use the internet to help my kids with their homework. On the other hand I know that it’s a very dangerous place for the kids of the world. I can’t tell you how many times I've been to a site that caring moms and dads have made for their kids. I am a bit worried that some of these sites may be giving out to much information. For example I went to a site made by a sixteen year old girl. She had picture of her in front of her High School. She also had her name, birthday, age, height, and name of the city where she lived. This is not the kind of information that should be on the internet. My daughter and I have been making websites together for years and we’ve come up with some rules.

Rule #1 Never use your real name. (Instead use a nickname)

Rule #2 Never tell your kids age.

Rule #3 Never tell where your from.

Rule #4 You should never put your child’s picture on a website. (Instead put your kids’ art on your site, or maybe a poem they wrote.)

Most people on the internet are good but I think that children need to be protected from predators. Just remember that predators are out there and they may be looking at your site so please be careful.
