John Slaton (1795-1847)
The following was written of John Slaton: "As a citizen, few men have gained the reputation of our lamented friend; as a man of enterprise, as a man of integrity and decision of character, he had few superiors. Mr. Slaton was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church for a number of years, and for the last ten years of his life, a Class Leader, which office he filled with great ability....He was a man of sterling mind, ardently attached to the doctrines and discipline of the M.E. Church. His doors were ever open for the reception of the ministers, as many of them can testify both of Georgia and Alabama; and he was ever ready to bear his part in their support. He made no loud profession of religion, no parade, no show, was quiet and unassuming; his backwardness amounted almost to timidity; yet he was conscientious in all his acts, firm in his purpose to do right and honoured for his unbending integrity. " (From his obituary written by Rev. James Brown.) And from an article in the Alabama Christian Advocate, John was "a fine old Kentucky gentleman of the best ante bellum type."
