A German priest Arnold Janssen, under the one Universal Church and Missionary in nature, founded the Congregation of the Divine Word Missionaries in Steyl (Holland) in the year 1875.
Years after, concern to the claim of women missionaries, also founded the Congregation of the Holy Spirit Sisters-SSpS (Missionaries) and the Holy Spirit Sisters of Perpetual Adoration-SSpSap (Contemplative).
