The public will be glad to know that the churchwardens of St. David's have concluded a searching investigation into the circumstances connected with the recent interments of the children of poor parents in the St. David's cemetry, It will be remembered that the refusal of admission to the church in one or two instances was made the subject of correspondence in this journal and that the statements made by eye-witnesses were indignantly denied by the sexton.
The facts elicited by the inquiry instituted by the churchwardens who appear to have gone very thoroughly into the matter amount to this: -The sexton has been in the habit without authority of exacting fees from the relatives of deceased persons to whom free burial has been accorded as a matter of course, on the plea of poverty being urged, and that in the case specially referred to by our correspondent, in which the body of a child was sent away from the church door, the fee customarily demanded was not forthcoming. We are informed that the Sexton has been reprimanded for his illegal proceedings, and fined in the sum of fifty shillings, to be paid to the Benevolent Society, and ordered to make restitution to the parties from whom he has improperly exacted fees: no further punishment being awarded in consideration of his length of service.
It is a matter of satisfaction to us that the strictures which appeared in this journal have led to the detection and prohibition of a most objectionable practice.
