We are writing to you from Valdivia in Southern Chile. For the
past six years we have been running a summer Music Camp (one week
in january) on the island of Mancera. This was attended by
children of the string orchestra of the Valdivia conservatory and
by other young musicians from all over Chile. The age ranges from
8 to 18 years catering for beginning and advanced levels.
The small island of Mancera is located in the mouth of the river
Valdivia facing the Pacific Ocean. It provides an untouched,
natural, safe and stimulating environment for students and
teachers alike. The accomodation is simple and the children
rehearse and performe in- and outdoors.
This Music Camp is unique within Chile. We are now looking into
extending its development into an international exchange
programme. This could manifest itself both in the exchange of
conductors or other music teaching staff, in the exchange of
music students or even mutual visits of youth orchestras. Our
students have been studying both the standard repertoire as well
as Chilean folklore material which we would be especially keen to
introduce overseas.
