Mid-South Concert Band

Chattanooga, Tennessee

The Mid-South Concert Band is an Associate Member of Allied Arts of Greater Chattanooga and performs at various civic functions and events throughout the year.  Organized in 1989, the band is an all-volunteer organization consisting of approximately 50 adult instrumentalists. The band members are teachers, housewives, doctors, travel agents, students, retirees, truck drivers, engineers and other professionals, all sharing a common interest in rehearsing and performing a wide variety of music together. The common thread running through all of our stories is that we had a great time playing in the band in high school and maybe college, and really regretted that there was not some way to continue the fellowship and satisfaction that comes from performing music in an ensemble.

It is truly a community band, with members hailing from Ooltewah, Harrison, Hixson and Signal Mountain on the north, and

south to Rossville, Chickamauga and Ft. Oglethorpe.

Mr. Jim Souders, Musical Director of the Mid-South Music Association, is retired after 30 years as director of the highly acclaimed Lakeview-Ft. Oglethorpe High School Band.  In addition to directing the Mid-South Concert Band, Souders continues to judge instrumental contests throughout the Southeast, and directs tours of musical all-star groups to Europe.

The music consists of both traditional band literature and contemporary arrangements.  A recent concert included music from Wagner, Mancini, and John Williams.  (And, of course, Sousa.)

Rehearsals are Thursdays from 7:15 to 9:00 in the Rossville Middle School band room. We practice weekly from mid-August through May, and there is a $15 semiannual membership fee.

If you are still hankering to play, and are willing to put in a little practice time to get back up to speed, we would love to hear from you.

Future Performances.
