♫ Aug 08 PARENTS MEETING
On Wednesday 13th August, in the band hall, we had a very useful and constructive meeting with Committee Members, Junior Players and Junior Band Parents. This was the first such meeting, to be organised on a regular basis in future, to give both junior players and their parents major input into the “running” of our junior band. Bert Ritchie chaired the meeting and welcomed the junior players and a small number of parents, explaining what the committee had in mind for the future of our junior band. Elaine Roxburgh, our Junior Band Administrator, was there noting various points that were raised and Ian Taylor, our Junior Band Conductor, gave an insight towards his ambitious plans for the band.
The following topics were discussed at the meeting:- ●Our aims for the Junior Band ●Tutors for the band ●Parent’s Involvement ●Parental consent system ●Player recruitment●Disclosure Scotland Volunteers ●Future Engagements ●Ultimate progression into the senior band ●A.O.C.B.
We hope that the junior players and the parents, who were able to attend, enjoyed the meeting and found it useful in relation to our future plans for the junior band.
We would encourage all junior players and parents to come to these regular meetings to let us know their thoughts on what they want to be achieved by our junior band. Your views and opinions matter to us!
♫ Apr 08 NATIONAL YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIPS “Our trip to the Finals in Manchester” by Ashley Dick and Becky Mitchell ♫ Aug 07 NYBBS (NATIONAL YOUTH BRASS BAND OF SCOTLAND) Four members of the Junior Band were selected to play at the annual concert held by the NYBBS in St Andrews in Fife. 180 of Scotland’s best young players take part in this annual extravaganza and we were delighted that Lindsay Roxburgh, Calum Ferguson, Robert Sykes and Alison Hutchison all represented Dalmellington Band. Also featured in this years event (his final year) was our senior band Solo Horn, Chris Dale. Archie Hutchison and John Boax were among the team of tutors who assisted our former Professional Conductor, Richard Evans to put on a great concert on Saturday 4th August. ♫ 3 Feb 07 Scottish Solo & Ensemble Success Rachel Jones (Cornet) was our only representative in the Under 12 Solos and she was awarded 3rd place.
In the Intermediate Solos (12 – 15) we had four players competing – Laura Wilson (Cornet) , David McLean (Tenor Horn), Becky Mitchell (Tenor Horn) & Gayle Douglas (Euphonium). All played extremely well according to Junior Band conductor Ian Taylor, with Laura Wilson gaining 1st Place from adjudicator Roger Webster.
The Youth Solos section saw Callum Ferguson (Cornet) and John Calderwood (Euphonium) compete, but despite good performances, didn’t feature in the Prize list.
In the Ensembles classes, our Dalmellington Band ‘A’ were awarded 3rd place, whilst the Dalmellington Band ‘B’ were 2 places behind in 5th place in the Intermediate Section.
Our quartet in the Junior Section also were awarded 3rd place.
All in all it was a tremendous day for all our competitors. It’s been many a year since we have been able to boast about having a Scottish Champion in our ranks, so well done to Laura Wilson for this achievement. As is always the case with success at competitions, there is a tremendous amount of hard work done behind the scenes to bring out the best in our young players. To our driving force of Ian Taylor and Hugh Johnstone we extend our grateful thanks and offer heartiest congratulations on a job well done. ♫ 20 Jan 07 MEDAL PRESENTATION NIGHT On Saturday 20 January, Junior Band members and their families and friends enjoyed a social night at Dalmellington Bowling Green to celebrate their success at the Scottish Youth Championships. Councillor Elaine Stewart was on hand to present medals to each of the players who took part in the contest.
