Robert Thompson, Bandmaster from 1922 – 1927, was born in Dunfermline in 1863. He was a cornet player of note and as a young man had sojourned in America for a number of years.
Upon returning to Scotland he took charge of Hamilton Palace Colliery Band for a time before coming to Ayrshire where he took up residence near Auchinleck. At this point he took charge of Burnie Knowe Band which was locally known as “The Burnie Baun”.
It was in 1911 that Robert was appointed Bandmaster at Dalmellington. His new position as Bandmaster also came with a job at the pithead No. 2 Pennyvennie and a house. The house that he was given was Dunein Cottage, which was situated next to the Church Hall on the Windy Row.
It was on the 24th September 1927 that villagers were saddened to hear their much respected Bandmaster had passed away.
Robert Thompson was a born musician, popular with the players, had the knack to carry the beginner and hold sway over the whole combination.
