Episode #13
One Wedding and a Broken Heart

Yup, a wedding. I figured it was time for one couple to go ahead and do it. Now, in reading this I want you to think that the characters involved have had this planned for a while and expected it.

Bette is sitting on the edge of her bed looking very nervous and wringing her hands. Evelyn walks in, wearing a simple, powder blue dress, knee length. He hair is in a nice upsweep.

EVELYN: Mom?

BETTE: What? Oh, yes?

EVELYN: Are you ready? You aren't even dressed yet?

BETTE: I'll be down in a minute.

EVELYN: Okay.

Evelyn leaves and walks down stairs to find Emily dressed in the same attire, as well as a very much showing Annie.

EMILY: Is she ready?

EVELYN: No.

ANNIE: The back porch is all set up, Judea, Brad, Leo, and David just finished it up.

On cue Jude, David, Leo, and Brad walk in.

DAVID: It looks great out there. Evelyn, you're parents are going to have a wedding to die for.

JUDE: Guests should start getting here soon.

EVELYN: Where's daddy?

AJ walks in.

AJ: I'm right here.

EVELYN: Nervous?

AJ: No. Yes, maybe a little. This is the best thing that can happen right now. Where is she?

ANNIE: Upstairs.

EMILY: She'll be down.

EVELYN: It's her eighth trip down the aisle, she's a little nervous. Not unsure, nervous. This is the, wait, let me think, third wedding I've been to of hers.

AJ looks a little worried.

EVELYN: And most certainly the last.

BRAD: Mr. Deschanel, I want to thank you for having me here.

Bette walks down dressed in a creme colored skirt suit, her hair is also up. By the by, AJ is wearing a dark suit with a vest and Jude, David, and Leo are wearing dark colored suits with powder blue ties, AJ's tie is black. He's in awe when he sees his bride.

AJ: You look as beautiful as you did the day we met.

BETTE: Thank you. Brad, may I speak to you?

BRAD: Um, yeah.

He and Bette go into a corner. Everyone else heads outside where on the beach is a platform with flowers on it. Behind it are about twenty chairs for guests. Brad and Bette are talking.

BETTE: When I came downstairs you thanked AJ for letting you share this with us. The reason why is that we are grateful Emily has you. Last night was a great shock to her and she is hurting deep down inside. When we came home last night to find you two on the sofa, she sleeping on your shoulder and you comforting her, that made us realize that you are a great friend to her. Don't make me regret my change in mind about you though like I had to with Amy. I believe though that you care about Emily and that you have her best interest at heart. As long as that is the case you're a friend to this family and always welcome her.

BRAD: Mrs. K-

BETTE: Bette.

BRAD: Bette, I don't want Emily hurt and you're not wrong about me, I won't make you regret trusting me. I love Emily. I won't hurt her. And I won't take advantage of her while she's like this. I would like a relationship with her, but if it's meant to happen it'll happen.

BETTE: Good boy. Now, we still have some time for guests to arrive. I'm going upstairs to check a few things. Man the door please?

Bette goes upstairs and the doorbell rings. Brad opens it to find Meg, Ben, Casey, Sara, Hank, and Joan there.

BRAD: Hi guys. Come on in. I'll show you where you'll sit.

He starts leading them, but the doorbell rings again.

BRAD: I have to get that. Um, bride or groom side?

BEN: Whichever is fine.

BRAD: Okay, straight out those doors then.

They leave and the doorbell rings again. Brad finds Gabi there.

BRAD: Hi. Straight out back and either side is fine.

GABI: Thank you, Brad.

Over the next twenty minutes Brad lets Michael, Vanessa, Tyus, Eddie, Ricardo, Maria, Ross, Cole, and Antonio in.

Out back Cole approaches AJ.

AJ: I'm very disappointed you won't be an usher, son.

COLE: I'm sorry, AJ. I can't do it.

AJ: Thank you for at least coming though. I hope that you can make peace with your brother soon though. He's forgiven you, he and Annie have forgiven each other.

COLE: I know. It's a bad time for me, AJ. I have to say I would have never expected Annie to be married and pregnant a year ago.

AJ: And I wouldn't have expected to have love and respect for her as I would my own child. It only proves people can change.

COLE: What's going on with Emily? She seems a little sad.

AJ: She and Sean broke up last night.

COLE: Oh my God.

AJ: He slept with Amy Nielsen again.

COLE: Poor Emily.

AJ: It's a bad day for her. To have to watch such a happy occasion and to be so sad. I cannot fathom it.

They continue talking and walk into the living room. The doorbell rings again and Brad opens it to find Olivia, Caitlin, and Sean. Brad gets a little defensive and steps in front of Sean before he can come completely in. Sean hasn't told his mom and Caitlin what happened, they had left at that point.

BRAD: You aren't welcome here, Richards.

SEAN: Move, Brad.

BRAD: No! What makes you think you can come in here and attend this wedding after what you did. Emily is hurting enough she doesn't need to see you here today.

SEAN: Brad, I was invited and I want to talk to her.

BRAD: You think anyone wants you here after that?

AJ and Cole step in.

AJ: Sean, it would probably be best if you went home.

COLE: Or to see Amy.

CAITLIN: Cole, what was that about? You owe Sean an apology.

COLE: So, you didn't tell them, did you Sean. First you cheat on her, then you show up here, and you can't tell your mom and sister that you cheated on your girlfriend. I would have thought that you would have learned the first time.

OLIVIA: What is going on?

Bette walks down.

BETTE: That's what I want to know. What are you doing here, Sean? You aren't welcome to this wedding.

OLIVIA: Bette?

BETTE: Tell her what you did to my daughter, Sean.

David walks in.

DAVID: Man, why are you here? That's stupid.

OLIVIA: Stop it, now! I want to know what is going on.

DAVID: He cheated on Emily last night, mom. Evelyn saw them.

CAITLIN: Sean, that isn't true is it?

DAVID: Evelyn wouldn't lie about it. And he isn't denying it either.

SEAN: I did it. I slept with Amy last night.

CAITLIN: Sean, go home.

OLIVIA: Darling, you really shouldn't have come here today.

SEAN: I just want to talk to Emily.

CAITLIN: Sean go. Please, if you trust me, go home.

SEAN: Cait, I love her.

CAITLIN: Amy, or Emily. Go home and we'll talk later.

He looks at all of them then walks out.

OLIVIA: I'm so sorry about that Bette. If I had known.

BETTE: I know. But both of you, promise me one thing.

CAITLIN: What?

BETTE: No battles with Annie. She's already promised to be on her best behavior I won't have you ruining my last wedding.

OLIVIA: Of course.

BRAD: I don't want to let Emily know that he was here. I want her to have as nice a day that is possible.

COLE: That's probably best.

They all agree and Olivia, Caitlin, David, and Brad go outside. Bette goes into the kitchen. AJ puts his hand on Cole shoulder.

AJ: Son, I want you do something for me. Something that would mean a lot.

COLE: What?

AJ: Give Bette away.

COLE: You want me to give Bette away?

AJ: Please? It would mean a lot.

COLE: Of course.

AJ: Thank you. I'll go tell Antonio we're ready to begin.

AJ leaves. He whispers in Antonio's ear it'll be a few moments. Annie, Evelyn, Emily, Jude, David, and Leo walk in. They get into pairs of Annie and Jude, Evelyn and David, and Emily and Leo. Bette walks in.

BETTE: Oh, we're going now?

COLE: Yes, and Bette, I am going to be giving you away.

BETTE: Oh, Dimps, that's wonderful.

Some music begins to play and the couples start going down the aisle. The wedding march begins and Cole walks Bette down the aisle. They reach the front and Antonio asks who gives her away.

COLE: I do.

He sits down.

ANTONIO: This is the second non-church sanctioned wedding I have performed in less than two months and they have both been for two wonderful and loving couples. Nothing could make me happier than to marry you two today. You are both good friends of mine and I wish you happiness. The bride and groom have asked to say a few words. Bette?

BETTE: AJ, I have loved you for a very long time. We have seen each other marry others and love others. But I have always loved you deep down. You gave me a beautiful daughter and we have always shared a deep friendship. I wouldn't forsake that or our love for all the diamonds in the world. This is a special day, not only because I'm marrying you, but because we're sharing it with our friends and most importantly our children here are all healthy and happy. I'm healthy and happy, and I don't think I would be if it weren't for you. So, thank you for being here and thank you for letting me love you. And thank you for being willing to be husband number eight, you'll definitely be the last.

The crowd laughs.

ANTONIO: AJ?

AJ: Bette, I don't think I can make this as eloquent as you put what you said. But we have been friends for a very long time, and lovers. I wouldn't have changed a moment of it. We share a child and our children are here. I love you, darling and I always have and will. I may not have always realized it at times. But it won't change. Most important in our relationship besides love is friendship. I cherish both and would not be able to continue without them.

ANTONIO: Thank you. Please, join hands. Armando Deschanel Junior do you take Bette Louise Douglas to be your lawfully wedded wife, to have to hold, to love and to cherish, for better or worse, in sickness and in health, for richer or poor, till death do you part?

AJ: I do, more than anything.

ANTONIO: Bette Louise Douglas do you take Armando Deschael Junior to be your lawfully wedded husband, to have to hold, to love and to cherish, for better or worse, in sickness and in health, for richer or poor, till death do you part?

BETTE: Not even in death, I do.

ANTONIO: By the power invested in me by the state of California I pronounce you man and wife. You may kiss you bride.

The kiss.

ANTONIO: Ladies and gentlemen it is a great honor to present to you Mr. Armando Deschanel.

Everyone cheers. The reception begins outside. Antonio walks up to Bette and AJ.

ANTONIO: Congratulations. But I'm afraid I have some business to attend to.

BETTE: Thank you, Padre.

AJ: Yes, you've been a good friend, Antonio.

ANTONIO: I don't think you'll need it, but good luck.

Antonio leaves. A but later everyone is sitting down and it's time for speeches. Annie stands up.

ANNIE: Um, this has been a really good day. This is something I have wished for a long time for you, Aunt Bette and it makes me so happy that you finally have it. I know this will last too because you're in love. I love you both.

Annie sits down. Soon dancing starts up. AJ and Bette's first dance is to "My Romance" (I don't have lyrics for that).

At the mission Antonio steps into the confessional, someone is on the other side.

ANTONIO: Good afternoon my child.

FRANCESCA: Bless me father for I have sinned. It's been...a really long time since my last confession. Nearly a year.

ANTONIO: What's on your mind?

FRANCESCA: I sinned against someone I considered to be a really good friend. I don't know if he ever saw it that way, but I was grateful for him. I never showed it though and now I want him to know how much I treasure his friendship, if I still have it.

ANTONIO: What did you to this friend.

FRANCESCA: I caught him making love to his brother's girlfriend on tape [Antonio looks shocked, beginning to realize who it is.]. I blackmailed him and the woman. Then I was shot and told him that she had done it. He thinks I've been dead for a year now. I'd like t make amends and see if maybe we can be friends again, Antonio.

ANTONIO: Francesca.

FRANCESCA: Yes.

ANTONIO: Step out of the box.

They both do.

ANTONIO: What happened, how are you alive?

FRANCESCA: Have lunch with me and let me explain, please. I don't deserve it, but that's all I'll ask of you.

ANTONIO: Okay.

He looks at her, next scene.

It's after the wedding, Jude walks in to cell area of the Sunset Beach Police Dept., jail. Gregory is reading a book.

JUDE: What's that, "How to Destroy Your Enemy"?

GREGORY: Careful you're on that list.

JUDE: At least we know we're on the same page.

GREGORY: What do you want?

JUDE: To let you know I am doing everything possible to keep you locked up and away from my wife and children.

GREGORY: Are you sure you can do that?

JUDE: Watch me. You won't ruin my family.

GREGORY: Never underestimate me.

JUDE: Just like you underestimated me?

GREGORY: You betrayed me.

JUDE: Even if it weren't my job, I would have done it anyway. You don't deserve freedom, you deserve to rot in hell. I'm going to get you as close to that as possible. You think you can just get rid of whoever gets in your way and doesn't serve a purpose to you. I'm going to teach you that you can't do that. Go near Annie or our children, you'll regret ever contacting me or having anything to do with Annie or I.

GREGORY: Your threats, they're empty. You'll soon realize I have more power than you can ever dream of.

JUDE: With what resources? Annie has everything responsible for your power.

GREGORY: I'm a resourceful man, as you'll soon find out.

Jude turns around and leaves.

At Surf Central Sara brings in the mail after the wedding. Okay, we're going to have to pretend that Sara was not premed, but finished medical school. She just never got her medical license.

SARA: Oh my God, Casey it's from the, the, the...

She's tongue tied.

CASEY: Sara, what is it?

SARA: It's my medical license! I'm a doctor, Casey!

CASEY: This is great!

He kisses her and hugs her.

CASEY: I guess you'd better call Tyus about that residency at South Bay General.

SARA: Yeah. I can't believe this. Part of me didn't think I'd get this far in life. Everything is perfect. I have a wonderful fiance, a great job. I'm so happy right now Casey.

CASEY: We're going to stay that way.

They left the door open, Meg is standing there.

MEG: Sounds like good news. What's going on, Casey?

Sara looks a little worried about her sister's new attachment to Casey.

Emily is sitting on a swing at the beach. From behind her Brad walks up and sits next to her.

BRAD: Nice wedding, eh?

EMILY: Yeah. AJ is going to make my mom really happy.

BRAD: Is was really great of them to have me there.

EMILY: They know you're a good friend to me.

BRAD: How are you doing?

EMILY: I trusted him, and now I feel like my heart has been ripped out.

BRAD: I don't know that feeling, and I don't know what to tell you. Except that I'm here for you through everything, whatever you need.

EMILY: Thanks, Brad.

BRAD: Hey, what are friends for? He broke your hear, didn't he?

EMILY: Into a thousand pieces.

BRAD: You can say no if you want, but I was walking through town this morning and saw that Aimee Mann tickets were going on sale. I know you like her, so I got four of them. I thought we could do it as a group thing, you me, David, and Evelyn. If you don't want to go out it's okay.

EMILY: That's so sweet, Brad. When is it?

BRAD: In three weeks.

EMILY: Okay, I'll be ready.
