Episode #2:
New Beginnings, New Acquaintances, New Habits

It's a new chapter with everything the title says. And, yes, this time I again start out with the Richards/Deschanel group. It's the morning after New Years, January 2. Oh, I know I skip around on a few things, days and such. But Sunset did it and so can I =)

Evelyn is sitting on the beach with something in her hands, which she reaches to her lips. David sits next to her.

DAVID: A flask?

EVELYN: It was a present, see, even has my initials on it.

DAVID: Yeah, but at ten in the morning, and you're underage.

EVELYN: Relax, it's just cider.

DAVID: Oh, sorry.

EVELYN: I might have thought the same thing if I were you.

DAVID: How's the whole family thing going?

EVELYN: Okay. It's tough to get used to. That they're actually my family. I've been away fom them for so long, I can't picture me having people around me. Except Leo, and for the most part, Jude.

DAVID: What about me?

EVELYN: You're not family.

DAVID: Yeah, but, being new in town, I need a friend. You're new in town too.

EVELYN: That I am.

DAVID: We've both in in boarding school away from our families who we barely even recognize since the last time we saw them. We have some stuff in common. How about it? Be my first friend in town?

EVELYN: Why not.

DAVID: Good. So, you busy today?

EVELYN: Depressingly, no. I did some work this morning, took a walk. I am amazingly available for the day.

DAVID: Good, you'll spend the day with me then.

EVELYN: I will?

DAVID: Yes.

EVELYN: And what will we be doing?

DAVID: Who knows. It's a new town left for us to explore. Come on.

EVELYN: Lead the way, my friend.

They head off towards town.

At the police station, Ricardo, Spencer, Ruiz, and DA Steele watch, shocked, to see Eddie Conners alive and well.

EDDIE: You all missed me, didn't you?

RICARDO: Eddie?

EDDIE: In the flesh, as alive as I was the day you thought I died.

RUIZ: Where have you been?

EDDIE: As far as I know, Seattle. Derek decided to make me his prisinor for a year and a half. Next thing I know the police storm in and here I am.

PATRICIA: Maybe we should go in and talk.

EDDIE: I'm up for lively discussion. I just have one question.

RICARDO: What's that?

EDDIE: How's Annie been?

They look at Eddie.

At Annie and Jude's, he walks in to find her cluttered on the sofa in a pair of glasses and stacks of books. Piled on top of these books is a very official looking document.

JUDE: What are you up to? And what's with the glasses?

ANNIE: I wear reading glasses. I just never wear them because I never read this much stuff.

JUDE: What is this stuff?

ANNIE: Law books. On divorce.

JUDE: On divorce?

ANNIE: I can't afford a lawyer to handle my case against Gregory, and I want five million dollars from him. I'm going for a jog after I file for the divorce, do you want to come?

JUDE: Why?

ANNIE: Because we're going to have a healthy baby.

JUDE: [He's upset.] I didn't mean why are you going jogging, I meant why are you asking for five million dollars?

ANNIE: Why are you mad?

JUDE: Because I have a right to know why you want so much money from him.

ANNIE: It's for the baby. And, no, you don't have a right to know. We aren't married, you have no claim on me.

JUDE: I have a claim on our child, dammit!

ANNIE: That's what you think!

She gets up and leaves, taking the papers with her. He sits for a few minutes then also leaves after throwing some of the books around.

Cole comes up behind Caitlin, however, she's in a foul mood and wants none of it.

COLE: What's wrong?

CAITLIN: Nothing.

COLE: Cait, I know when something's wrong with my wife.

CAITLIN: It's just the settling in after you getting back. It's just, nevermind.

COLE: No, Caitlin, we always promised to talk about things. Now what's bothering you?

CAITLIN: Did you ever think of getting a real job and supporting your family? So that you and I could have our own home? Cole, I love you, but it would be nice of you would have the ambition to do something in your life.

COLE: So, that's what you think of me? You're ashamed of me? You won't have to put up with any longer, Princess!

He storms out, leaving her behind, not seeming bothered.

At Surf Central, Alex, Casey, Sara, and Gabi are having a pleasant conversation. Again, the doorbell rings.

SARA: I'll get it.

She sees Nick when she opens the door.

SARA: Oh my God, Nick! What are you doing here?

NICK: Kosovo is boring this time of year.

She playfully hits him in the arm.

SARA: Is your time up? Are you going to stay here for good now? What was Kosovo like? Was it sad? Have you seen mom and dad? Oh, I'm so hapy to see you. You missed Meg's wedding a few days ago. She's coming home tomorrow.

NICK: Sara, Sara, slow down. Yes, I'm out now, I'm moving here, you'll have to help me find an apartment, Kosovo is an interesting place and seeing those people was very sad, and I just came from Hank and Joan's. How else to you think I got here?

SARA: You should stay with us. Is that okay, Casey?

NICK: Um, sorry, in her excitement my sister's manners flew out the window. I'm Nick Cummings.

SARA: Oh, sorry. Sgt. Nicholas Cummings. It's sounds nice and no sister has ever been prouder of her big brother.

CASEY: It's nice to meet you. I'm Casey Mitchum, this is my mom, Alex, and our friend Gabi Martinez.

NICK: Hi. So, mom and dad said you wanted to tell me?

SARA: Yeah, I do. Casey is not only my best friend, but he is my fiancee.

NICK: You're getting married? And you thought it would never happen.

SARA: I was almost right. I was right about one thing that I always said when we were growing up.

NICK: Meg'll be married first?

SARA: That's the one. But, she deserves being with Ben. Did anyone write you what she and Ben have been through?

NICK: I read them to the guys, they thought my entire family was describing a soap opera for me.

SARA: You have no idea how happy I am to have you here.

NICK: You're very exuberant. That's why you're my favorite sibling. But let's keep that between everyone in this room.

SARA: Got it. I missed you.

CASEY: Nick, if you want to stay here while you look for a place feel free to.

NICK: I actually am getting a room at the Inn at Sunset Beach.

SARA: Oh, come one. You'll save money, we'll give you your privacy, and I'll take you around town tonight. Me and Casey and Alex and Gabi.

ALEX: I have been on an airplane for hours, I am going to sleep like a rock tonight. But thank you for including me.

SARA: We'll miss you tonight. Casey, is that okay, if we take him out tonight? We'll go to the Deep.

CASEY: Yeah, yeah, it'll be fun. Gabi?

GABI: I'm staying inconspicuous.

SARA: Yeah, Nick, of you wouldn't mind could you not tell anyone that Gabi is here?

GABI: It's a long story.

NICK: No problem. And, Casey, welcome to the family. But of you break her heart, I know people with military training.

CASEY: You don't have to worry about that.

NICK: Good. Um, yeah, I'll stay here. Oh, I almost forgot, and they would have killed you and me, mom and dad want you to take me to the Shock Wave. I haven't seen them so proud since Betsie the pig gave birth.

SARA: I miss that pig. Give me fifteen minutes and we'll get going.

She runs upstairs.

GABI: I'm going to go take a long nap.

ALEX: And I'm going to unpack.

They go upstairs.

NICK: I mean it. Sara hasn't always thought the best of herself and if you do anything to bring that back, I'll break your neck. She is my favorite sister.

CASEY: Nick, you can trust me with Sara, I will never do anything that would ever hurt her.

NICK: She's made a lot of mistakes. That thing in Washington, having a crush on Tim Truman, lying to you. Yeah, I know about that. But I think she's made a good choice in the man she's going to spend her life with.

CASEY: Um, I don't want to be the bearer of bad news, but I was wondering if you knew about Tim Truman?

NICK: What, is he still making trouble for Meg?

CASEY: Um, no, he isn't making trouble for anyone actually. Tim was murdered by Ben's psycho twin a few months ago.

NICK: Hmm. I always knew he'd get into trouble. That is not something I expected to hear though.

CASEY: Oh, when Sara says fifteen minutes, she means forty-five.

SARA: [From upstairs.] I heard that.

Both men laugh.

NICK: I think I'm going to like it here.

CASEY: Do me a favor?

NICK: What?

CASEY: I'm going to protect Sara against anything that comes our way, but I want a back up too.

NICK: Say no more. Why the precautions?

CASEY: You haven't heard about what's happened the past month or so?

NICK: Enlighten me. Apparently we have forty-five minutes.

Casey tells him about Derek and Tess.

At the peir, Michael and Vanessa step off the cruise ship. Her parents got off at San Diego.

MICHAEL: So, Mrs. Bourne, what's it like to be beginning the first day of our lives together at home?

VANESSA: Well, Mr. Bourne, now that you ask, it's the greatest feeling in the world. Oh, but I have to go into the office for a little something. Is it okay if I meet you back at home later.

MICHAEL: Vanessa, the honeymoon's barely over and you want to go to work already?

VANESSA: A reporter's work is never done, and it's only for a little bit.

MICHAEL: Okay, okay. Behave, Scoop.

VANESSA: I always do. I love you.

MICHAEL: I love you too.

They kiss before she heads off in the opposite direction.

Maria and Benjy are sitting at the kitchin table in their new house.

MARIA: Well, young man, what do you think of our new house?

BENJY: It's nice.

MARIA: You miss your daddy's house?

He nods his head.

MARIA: Well, he and Meg will be back tonight and tomorrow you get to spend a week with them. Daddy said he'd take you to work with him and you can help him with his business.

BENJY: All right! Can Franklin come too?

MARIA: I don't think so honey. But Franklin will wait for you at daddy's house and daddy and Meg will make sure the two of you are well taken care of.

BENJY: Franklin likes the toy Meg got him.

MARIA: You're okay with daddy living with Meg and with Meg being daddy's wife, right?

BENJY: Is daddy happy?

MARIA: I haven't seen your daddy this happy in a long time.

BENJY: Meg's nice. She's my friend.

MARIA: Good.

The door bell rings.

MARIA: Don't move a muscle. Mommy will be right back.

She answers the door to find Ross and his daughter, Hayley.

MARIA: Ross, Hayley, come on in. Benjy is just finishing his soup and we can go to the park in a minute. Is that all right?

ROSS: Sure it is. Right, sweet pee.

She nods her head.

MARIA: Do you want a cookie, Hayley? Is that okay, Ross?

ROSS: Yeah.

MARIA: How 'bout it?

She smiles broadly.

They go into the kitchin.

In her jail cell Tess is looking at a picture of Benjy with tears streaming down her cheeks. She wipes them from her face and sits up.

TESS: Don't worry, Derek, our son will have everything he could ever want, or need. And more...

From behind a buch a woman stares at the Richards mansion and at a visibly shaken Caitlin through the window.
