Episode #8
Troublesome Revelations, Part Two

Annie's day in court. And Evelyn's. It's a Richards/Deschanel only episode.

Evelyn is dressed in a suit and walks down stairs. Emily, David, Leo, Bette, and AJ are there.

EVELYN: Good morning.

AJ: Is it?

EVELYN: Not really. I have a headache. I'm sorry.

LEO: You remember what happened?

EVELYN: Not much. Just that I was drunk, came here and yelled at Annie, went out and got drunker. I never did intend for you to find out about it. But I'm glad you did.

BETTE: Why?

EVELYN: Because I haven't thought this clearly in a year and a half.

AJ: Is that how long this has been going on?

EVELYN: Since the summer between junior and senior year of high school. Then as time went on I started getting sloshed every night. I used to be able to hold it better, but I guess that all went to hell.

BETTE: In a hand basket.

EVELYN: I didn't want to hurt any of you. I didn't think I was even hurting myself.

BETTE: I had thought we had taught you better than that.

Evelyn looks down at the ground.

Annie is standing in front of the mirror dressed in her most conservative suit. Jude comes up behind her and places his arms protectively around her stomach. He kisses her on the cheek and she smiles.

JUDE: You look great.

ANNIE: Like I can win this thing?

JUDE: You will. Not because you look incredible, but because you're smart.

ANNIE: Don't you know how to make a girl feel special.

JUDE: There's only one I want to make feel that way.

ANNIE: If she's me then you have succeeded.

JUDE: I called AJ and Bette's.

ANNIE: Evelyn?

JUDE: Wasn't awake yet. But I'm sure when she is she'll have one hell of a hang over that isn't going to help her when she's in front of a judge.

ANNIE: We'd actually better get going. We'll see her there.

He turns her around and kisses her.

Evelyn looks up at David, Emily, then her mother.

EVELYN: So did I. I made a huge, long term mistake. This is going to follow me for the rest of my life and there's nothing I can do about it. It's a big mistake and I feel like I let every one of you down. And that's worse than anything I could have ever done.

She's crying now. Bette gets up and hugs her.

EVELYN: I'm sorry, Mom.

BETTE: You're okay, you're okay, Sweet.

Evelyn wipes the tears from her eyes.

EVELYN: What happened? After I left I only remember getting drunker, but I don't remember what happened. How did you find me, what happened? All I remember after that is being told by Leo that I have to be in court this morning. That's why I got dressed like this. When was that?

LEO: When I put you to bed last night after we picked you up.

EVELYN: From where?

AJ: The police station. You were arrested for possession of a deadly weapon and shooting that gun.

EVELYN: Did I hit anyone?

LEO: Emily. It grazed her arm.

EVELYN: What have I done?

EMILY: It's okay, Evelyn.

EVELYN: No, it isn't.

AJ: If we didn't support you and forgive you, would we be here?

EMILY: I wouldn't. Evelyn, you shot me in the arm. A little scratch, a little bandage, I'm fine. I can go to work, go to school, everything is fine. The only thing we have to worry about is getting you and David down to the court house to face the charges.

EVELYN: Why David? Why do you have to see the judge?

DAVID: When you were arrested I was standing next to you and the police didn't know who shot the gun. I told them it was me, but since you were so drunk they took us both in.

EVELYN: I didn't want to do this to you.

DAVID: I know that. I made my own choice to lie, Evelyn. You weren't holding the gun to my head.

EVELYN: Don't lie to the judge. Let the story be told the way it happened.

AJ: We hired the best attorney for you both. He'll meet us there. He has a strategy you should follow.

EVELYN: No.

BETTE: I don't think you're in a position to say yes or no.

EVELYN: I don't want a lawyer. I'll represent myself. The lawyer you hired can speak for David if he wants, but I'm taking the fall for my own actions. I have to take responsibility.

AJ: Okay.

DAVID: If she's going to do it herself, so will I. Evelyn, I'm with you in this completely.

EVELYN: I don't deserve this.

DAVID: You have a family like mine, you learn the forgive.

EVELYN: Thank you.

She looks at them all wearily.

Soon Annie, Jude, Evelyn, David, Maria, Bette, AJ, Cole, Trey, Leo, Sean, Emily, Olivia, and Caitlin are in the court room.

Evelyn goes up to Cole.

EVELYN: What are you doing here?

COLE: Leo called me and told me what happened. I wanted to be here for you.

EVELYN: What about your wife?

COLE: What about her?

EVELYN: Are you not speaking to her?

COLE: I haven't been for a while.

EVELYN: If I had been sober during that time I might have known that.

COLE: It's going to be okay.

EVELYN: I hope so.

COLE: I love you, Evelyn.

EVELYN: I love you too.

Two minutes later the proceedings are under way. David and Evelyn's case is being heard and they are about to speak.

JUDGE: Mr. Richards, would you like to tell me what happened?

DAVID: Um, earlier that day Evelyn had shared some harsh words with her family. She was drunk. She ran off and my brother and Evelyn's brother and sister were told that we should go get our minds off of it. We went to a club for some fun. I was near the restrooms and bumped into Evelyn, who was worse than when I had last seen her. The police entered the club and started yelling and some guy ran by and gave Evelyn the gun. I knew she was drunk so I tried to get it away from her and she accidentally pulled the trigger. Then we were both arrested. I was told because the police couldn't tell who had the gun and also because they could see how drunk Evelyn was.

JUDGE: How do you know she accidentally pulled the trigger? Her sister, Emily Davis was hit, correct?

DAVID: Yes, she was. I know that it was an accident because I know Evelyn and I know that she would never want to hurt anyone, even though she was drunk.

JUDGE: Thank you Mr. Richards. Ms. Deschanel, you're turn.

EVELYN: I don't remember what happened, just being told that I would have to be here this morning as I was passing out. I do know that no matter what I would never intentionally hurt my sister.

JUDGE: You have a problem.

EVELYN: I know that.

JUDGE: I have handled many of these cases and I can honestly say that you are an alcoholic.

EVELYN: I know.

JUDGE: You seem to know a lot. What are you doing about this problem? You are an underage alcoholic, which in my mind is ten times worse.

EVELYN: I'm going to begin going to AA meeting this evening and I have an appointment with a psychiatrist. I know that I have made a huge mistake that is going to affect my entire life. I can't change that, but I can try and make it better. That's the only thing I can think of to say on my behalf.

JUDGE: You show great remorse which is why I am dropping the charges for both you and Mr. Richards. Keep up your meetings and try and stay sober. I never want to see you in this court room for this type of thing ever again.

EVELYN: Nothing against you, your honor, but I never want to see you like that ever again.

JUDGE: Good, Ms. Deschanel. You have a good head on your shoulders and you seem bright. I would have hated to see that ruined because of an addiction, a stupid addiction. This case is dismissed. Five minute break until the next.

Gregory is brought into the court room wearing a suit and handcuffs. Two police officers are on either side of him and sit down next to him and his attorney, Joshua Sloane.

The judge comes back in five minutes later. Order is called to the court and Joshua Sloane and Annie make their cases.

JUDGE: Is there anything else?

JOSHUA: If it's all right, your honor, we would like to cal a witness.

JUDGE: I'll allow it, but be careful. Is this person here?

JOSHUA: Yes.

JUDGE: Go ahead.

JOSHUA: We call Mr. Jude Cavanaugh to the stand.

There are a lot of surprised looks all around. Jude walks up to the stand and is sworn in.

JOSHUA: Mr. Cavanaugh, you arrested Mr. Richards and investigated him for many years, correct?

JUDE: Yes.

JOSHUA: And you know Ms. Douglas well.

JUDE: I do.

JOSHUA: Do you believe she is a good person.

JUDE: I do.

JOSHUA: What is your relationship with her?

JUDE: I'm in love with her.

JOSHUA: Really? If she's such a good person that you are in love with why would she cheat on her husband?

There are television monitors in the court room and they all flash on to a security camera tape of Gregory/Jude's office the first night Annie and Jude made love. Annie bolts to her feet.

ANNIE: Objection!

JUDGE: Sustained. There is no reason for that Mr. Sloane.

JOSHUA: Your honor the date on the tape is from November of 1999 when my client and Ms. Douglas were still a married couple. This proves that she was unfaithful to him.

ANNIE: Too bad there aren't tapes of the times Gregory tried to kill me, or treated me like dirt. Or when he was blackmailing me and his own daughter. That tape does not show that at that time I believed that Gregory was dead. I never cheated on him. I was not with a man after Gregory died until then, I was faithful every day of that marriage until I he faked his own death and pretended to be his dead uncle.

JUDGE: I agree with you, Ms. Douglas. Continue, Mr. Sloane so that I can see if this line of questioning is relevant to this case.

JOSHUA: Mr. Cavanaugh, is Ms. Douglas carrying your child.

JUDE: No.

ANNIE: Objection your honor. We have already determined that my relationship with Mr. Cavanaugh is irrelevent, why should this matter?

JUDGE: Agreed, this questioning is over and I have made my decision. Mr. Cavanaugh, if you'd step down and take your seat.

Jude steps down and sits next to Annie, which gets a look from the judge and Gregory.

JUDGE: Mr. Richards you are worth six point two billion dollars which is quite a large sum that you will not need where you are going. All of your children are provided for and there is no other place your estate could go. So, I am throwing out your agreement with Ms. Douglas and awarding her not only the five million dollars she requested, but also everything you own and every penny you have. Maybe you'll think twice before playing that type of a tape and asking those questions in my court room. I was ready to award half of what she asked until you did that. You are now a divorced couple as well. Ms. Douglas, I'd like to see you in my chambers.

He steps down and walks to the door where he waits for Annie who is kissing Jude and smiling. Caitlin and Olivia are scowling at Annie.

David approaches his father.

GREGORY: David. I hear that you were arrested.

DAVID: The charges were dropped.

GREGORY: I understand it was the fault of AJ's daughter.

DAVID: I know you, you only think that because you hare AJ. They're good people and a good family. I like to be around them and Evelyn is a good friend.

GREGORY: I see you still don't think highly of me.

DAVID: You brought it on yourself.

GREGORY: I don't know who you take after. It must have been a relative I didn't know.

DAVID: Thank God.

The police take Gregory off to jail.

The judge and Annie are in his office.

JUDGE: I understand you have only six weeks of law school.

ANNIE: Yes.

JUDGE: You did an impressive job.

ANNIE: Thank you.

JUDGE: You're now a very wealthy woman, I suggest you find yourself a lawyer. I just wanted to commend you on what you've done. Is there anything you'd like to say?

ANNIE: How do you get a marriage license?

JUDGE: If you'll wait I'll have the bailiff bring it out to you. I assume the names are Anna Claire Douglas and Jude Cavanaugh?

ANNIE: Yes, thank you.

She leaves his office and takes Jude's hand and leads him to the hallway outside the court room.

JUDE: What did the judge want to see you about?

ANNIE: He wanted to congratulate me.

JUDE: Oh.

ANNIE: Why did you say I wasn't pregnant?

JUDE: Because he asked if you were carrying my child, you're carrying my children. So, I didn't lie.

ANNIE: Will you marry me?

JUDE: What?

ANNIE: On Monday will you marry me?

JUDE: Yes.

He picks her up and kisses her as the bailiff brings out the license and their family joins them.

BETTE: What's going on?

JUDE: We're getting married on Monday.

EVELYN: That's Valentine's Day.

ANNIE: That's right it is. Maria, you'll be my maid of honor? And Emily and Evelyn you'll be bride's maids?

MARIA, EVELYN, EMILY: Yes.

Annie walks towards Bette and they walk over to a little corner.

ANNIE: Will you give me away?

BETTE: I'd be happy to.

Jude is talking to Leo and AJ.

JUDE: Be my best man, AJ, and Leo, you'll be an usher.

AJ, LEO: Of course.

LEO: Don't you need someone else?

JUDE: Yeah, probably. If I were speaking to Cole, but...

Evelyn whispers something in Jude's ear.

JUDE: Yeah. Since you helped out so much with my sister and since you're such a good friend to her, will you, David?

DAVID: Oh, wow, yeah, sure.

Annie and Bette join them.

ANNIE: I guess we'd better get started planning.

They all walk away from the court room with Cole, Olivia, and Caitlin watching on.

BETTE: [Voice over.] Greggy-Poo's lawyer asked if Annie was pregnant and Handsome said no. But they both turned beet red.

Later in the evening Annie goes in to law school friend, Paul's, office.

PAUL: If it isn't Annie. This place is a buzz with gossip of what happened today. Did you really get everything Gregory Richards has?

ANNIE: Had, and yes.

PAUL: If I had known that was possible I'd dropped out of law school with you.

ANNIE: Then you wouldn't get to be my lawyer.

PAUL: You need a lawyer.

ANNIE: I think it'd be smart. I want to draw up my will and distribute a few of my belongings to people. I also want to set up three trust funds.

PAUL: For whom?

ANNIE: Armando Deschanel III and my two children.

PAUL: What two children?

ANNIE: I'm three months pregnant with twins. And we have the attorney client privilege now. Only two other people know, Maria Torres and Evelyn Deschanel.

PAUL: Got it. Let's get to work. What are you giving away?

ANNIE: The house. Gregory's. I don't want it, I don't need it. It goes in the name of Caitlin Deschanel.

PAUL: Okay.

They get to work.

The next part takes place the day of the wedding.
