Beethoven's 5th
The orchestra I'm in is playing
Beethoven's 5th 1st & 4th movements and there's a push by the
symphony to perform the whole symphony. The director has left the
decision up to the cello section as to whether we play it or not due
to the difficulty of the 2/3 movements. We would like to do it well
or not at all. We are having a sectional this weekend to determine
if the cello section is up to the challenge. I think we can do it,
but I am looking for suggestions from those that have played the 5th
before on the best place to concentrate our
efforts.
TIA PaulM

Re:
Beethoven's 5th
Paul - the second movement is made
up of a number of audition passages - these are places that
virtually every orchestra has on their audition list because they
are so telling of someone's playing - opening of the mvt. - measure
10, meas. 49 - 59, 98 - 106, 114-123. Good luck. Sarah

Hard?
I'll say it's hard.
I remember when I was just knee-high
to a grass hopper (in orchestral terms) - 16 and thought 'ha,
Beethoven #5, any idiot can play that', having only heard/seen it,
rather than tried to play it myself.
Then it popped up in
Audition Class, the same excerpts that Sarah mentioned. Lord help
us, it was fiendish, because it has to be so beautiful, and it's
hard to play beautifully...
Good luck, and work hard

Re:
Beethoven's 5th-DO IT!!!!
Whether it will be perfect, or
beautiful, or whatever, please, please, please play the entire
piece. There's a reason that the piece is played so much. It's a
great masterpiece, and you should have the opportunity to perform
the entire work. It will be difficult, and may not sound as
wonderful as you would all like, but it would be a shame not to take
the chance and challenge yourselves with this great music. You
don't say where you are located, but if you have sectionals, maybe
you could have a professional come to one of your sectionals to help
you with it. Good luck.

it's
hard but...
I know it is hard, but you must try
and do everything to learn it so that you can play all of the
movements. If you play just the first and forth movements it is as
if you are giving the introduction and conclusion to an essay or
work of literature but non of the actual writing (excuse the poor
analogy). I can not stand to listen to symphonies play just bits and
pieces of any work, it just bugs me. So please, try and get through
the tough spots, the final result will be very rewarding. Good Luck!

Re:
Beethoven's 5th
Thanks to all for the encouragement.
We had a sectional on Sunday. It went well considering we are just
bunch of doctors and scientists. We have a good section leader and a
director that is exceptional. The real truth will come on
Wednesday's rehearsal. Thanks again.

Re:
Beethoven's 5th
Our sectional was better than we
thought. At rehearsal it was not the cellos have the majority of the
problems. Those of you that responded will be glad it here that we
are going ahead with the complete symphony. Lots of work for the
next six weeks. I'll let you know how the concert (May 19th)
goes.
