blaring open strings
Hi all,

My latest incarnation as a cello student is going well, with me practicing much more regularly and knowing much more clearly what I am working toward. While practicing today though I ran into a problem that is pretty consistent -- while practicing broken thirds, my tone was pretty good EXCEPT on open strings, which sounded very harsh and blaring in contrast to the fingered notes. Does this have to do with my attack? My strings?

Probably some of both attack and strings. What kind of cello and what kind of strings? You generally need to relax your attack for open strings to get a comparable sound.

Also check that your bow is straight. Open strings are less forgiving than "stopped" notes.
