cello
dreams - cello nightmares
I just had a dream last night that
my cello, which I am about to trade in for a new instrument, had
deep, long cracks on the table and a whole piece of the top came
off. In addition, the varnish on the back was bubbling off and I
ended up peeling off myself. Has anybody else had a cello
nightmare?

Mine
are always the normal stress variety
My nightmares are....I walk on stage
and all of my strings are dangling....I look down and realize I'm
half naked....

Re:

Yes, I have had one- it was kind of
a nightmare. I don't remember if I told my teacher about it, and he
was in it. I was playing my cello and while I was playing, it
started to splinter underneath my fingers (I really DO need to
practice more...) and break apart. The bridge went sproinging off at
hight velocity somewhere, and then I started to cry. I remember
clearly saying: "I'll call Walter; he'll know what to do." So I
called him up, and he came over in his BIG Toyota 4x4 pickup (which
he does not own!). So I blubbered about what had happened to my
cello and he calmly asked me to give it to him. He started to play
it, and all the pieces started to fit themselves back together and
the cello became playable again. He acted like it was no big deal,
and I told him that I figured he could fix it. After that, the dream
ended. Thank goodness.

cellist
playing the piano?!?
Even though I'm a cellist, I've had
nightmares that I have to give a piano recital or concerto
performance - but I'm still only as good at the piano as I am in
real life, which doesn't say much. Once I dreamt that I had to play
Mozart d minor concerto with a major orchestra and an important
conductor but I only just found out minutes before the dress
rehearsal. Before I went onstage I scrambled to practice, trying to
remember everything I'd learned in my college piano classes.

Not
quite a cello dream, but...
This wasn't MY dream (it was my
roommate's):
She said that our quartet was driving to some
unknown place, and our other violinist, Paulo, wasn't in the car.
Instead, we had a replacement whom only I knew, and I assured
everyone else that he was good. However, we started rehearsing (in
the car!), and he couldn't play a single note right. So, I got
angry, told him he sucked, and threw him out of the car. We then
stopped at a gas station and Paulo was there waiting for us, so we
picked him up and continued on our trip.

cello
nightmare
Every now and then, after I quit
playing cello, I have this dream, where I'd be at my old college,
Shenandoah Conservatory, and I'd be back stage looking for my cello.
I'd open doors, all around and no cello. Sometimes I'd find my case,
but it was empty. I'd go round and round looking for my missing
cello. Sometimes I'd see my teacher standing at a crossroads to
several halls, and he'd point, and off I'd go looking, still never
finding my cello. I'd finally wake up, upset.
Since I've
started playing again, I haven't had the dream again. Very
Freudian.

Re:

well not really a nightmare but
... I dreamt I was playing the Beethoven sonatas with Martha
Argerich, who told me I should upgrade my cello and called Mischa
Maisky to bring over one of his spare ones. Of course the dream
ended right when I was sitting down to play the beatiful cello he
brought over. Damn!

Another
chamber music nightmare
two nights ago i dreamt
this:
our trio was going to perform in a concert. our turn
came, and we walked to the hall (no stage, have to walk beside the
audience), and noticed that the grand piano is by the entrance and
not in the middle where it should have been (probably this "lapse"
was in the dream because on one mastercourse we forgot to open the
piano lid and the teacher was very annoyed).
then lauras
(pianist) mobile phone rings, end she answers (almost everyone in
finland has one)! there is her ex-boyfriend, and she gets
hysterical, shouting to the phone "leave me alone, why do you keep
calling after me!" etc. we advance to the center, laura still
trembling.
finally we start playing the first movement of a
piece - something fast. soon it starts falling apart. we destroy the
piece totally and embarrassingly have to stop playing in the middle
of the piece.
then we continue to play the second movement -
slow. during our playing there is a slide show behind us. the
violinist, polina, has made the show and there is blue skies,
angels, short poems etc. everything that a bad taste could create!
terrible! and then i woke up...
i told about this dream to
laura and polina yesterday in our rehearsal. they werent flattered -
they said that now they know how i really see them: another a
hysteric, another a romantic with really bad
taste...

Re:
cello dreams - cello nightmares
One of the very common dreams we all
experienced (experience?) in college is to discover we have not been
to class all term and all of a sudden we have a final or paper for
which we have done no preparation. The concept doesn't stop, just
the circumstances. I have had the same dream involving the sudden
realization that I was playing a concerto or a recital, the day of
the performance having arrived, and not knowing a note of the
work(s) involved. I have also had the nightmare (more than once) of
discovering the conductor no longer wanted my services the following
season (upon waking and reflecting about the protection of an
orchestral master contract, I know that can't happen the same way as
my dream), and wondering what I am going to do for a job.
Sometimes reality (even with obnoxious conductors!) is a
whole lot better than dreams!

Re:

Yeah, I have had the dream many
times of getting up to play a recital for which I am completely
unprepared. I try to sightread/fake my way through the first half.
Horrible. Inevitably, I find that I left the music for the second
half of the concert at home. I rush home during the intermission to
get the music, rush back, and find that the entire audience has left
after tiring of waiting for me. Fortunately, I have not had a
reoccurrence of this dream in quite a while...

Re:

I have a recurring dream (no, I'm
not flying) where all the classical musicians of the world decide to
follow the lead of the likes of Britney Spears and the Backstreet
Boys, using their bodies and faces to sell their recordings. I mean,
where would the world be if classical musicians posed in bed with
their instruments for their CD jackets?

I
started playing because of a dream
back in high school, I was a pianist
until I started having this dream every single night that I went to
my piano recital, and my teacher would hand me a cello and say,
"Here, we want you to play this instead. Okay.. you're on in five
minutes!" And I would run backstage and madly try and figure out how
to play the cello.
The dreams stopped when I actually started
playing cello. I think someone was trying to tell me
something.
