Just wondering . . .
How many pieces do the rest of you work on simultaneously? At any given time I'm apt to have 5 or more things "in the works" and wonder if I'm spreading myself too thin? How do you all juggle multiple projects?

Like right now I'm working on a Bach prelude, a Brahms sonata, Vocalise by Rachy, and 2 different Beethoven trios. I always find my practice time being dictated by what I'll need to do next (if it's Tuesday, I'll work on the trio that meets on Wednesday, etc.). It feels like I'm always having to put something on the back burner to get the latest thing up and running---and nothing ever really comes up to a rolling boil, so to speak. I just keep shuffling the burners around.

And there's SO much great literature I want to learn, if I bought all the music I'm itching to try, my music stand would topple over!

How do the rest of you manage it all? TIA for any suggestions, input.

Janet

Re: Just wondering . . .
Good timing for your question.. I was just wondering that myself. Right now I have four orchestra pieces, Beethoven variations with a pianist, and stuff for my lesson. I always feel like something is not getting full time consideration. Usually (she writes guiltily) it is orchestra that gets short shrift, though I do try to get it up to speed if a concert is coming up. One of the challenges of being a cellist-by-night, I guess. The only solution is to take on less (no fun) or to find more time somewhere, or to juggle things and manage.

I hate to say it, but I'm also guilty of working on a couple pieces at the same time also, also read a couple books at the same time too. Theres just so much music I want to learn and play too.But what I have taken to doing is cutting it down now sometimes.Pieces I want to memorize I'll concentrate on those until I've got it down like I did on Vocalise and Elegy. Now I'm working on memorizing Bach's Suite 3. Than I'll pick a Sonata to learn: Bach's Viola da gamba Sonata in G at the moment, than a concerto :Haydn's C right now. If I get bored practicing those over and over I'll venture into new music to take a break from the others. But I'm trying to perfect the pieces I'm working on before going on to new pieces, but its hard sometimes. So I guess you might want to concentrate on the pieces you really want to learn or need to, and lightly touch on other stuff to keep it interesting at the side.Maybe work out a schedule.

Re: Just wondering . . .
My orchestra does 3 concerts/year, so except for the summer I have 3 pieces to work on at all times. I have gone back to my early morning practice: 5:30-6:30 and I practice with my daughter most afternoons: her stuff. I've tried to do cello work during the summer but the past 2 summers didn't work out that way for me.

This year my orchestra is throwing in a performance of Peter and the Wolf with a puppet theatre. We've had 3 rehearsals for this and just rec'd our May concert music. Peter is this coming Sunday then we'll be back to normal.

The cello has not been a high priority this year but with the new cello I'm making a renewed commitment. Things are settling down, too. I felt that last spring I was getting somewhere and I was the most prepared for our May concert, the most prepared I'd ever been - felt like a personal best. Things fell apart over the summer, lot's of life and a bad round of arthritis. I have to work to get back to where I was but I really want to do it.

less if you just started ??
Hi everyone !!
I just started 2,5 month ago and now I work at 2 pieces (Bach's preludium of the 1st Suite and the Largo of the Cello Sonata by Chopin) and lots of technique and bow exercises. It's hard for me to keep it all up and make 'enough' progress each week..... do you think those things will get better when I play longer ??? Hope so !!
xxx Martine.
