Rachmaninov Sonata in g minor
On a scale of 1 - 10, how would you
rate its degree of difficulty?

Rachmaninoff Sonata
The piano part is VERY difficult.
The cello part paobably rates a 3 in technical difficulty (if 10 is
the hardest), but musically it MUST be played with a '10' in
passion!! My FAVORITE sonata!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is also one of my faves! (I'll
not bore you with how you can hear me play it with Xak Bejrken, one
of the greatest pianist I've ever worked with, on my mp3
website)
But seriously, it's a terrific piece to play and technically
it's not all that difficult. MOst of it is in 1-5 position with some
higher singing notes at times. It's such an experience to play it
with a great pianist too. If you don't have a great pianist who can
play it well, I'd say skip it, because it will be more frustrating
than enjoyable.

You won't belive this...but
two (!) of the pianists at my school has asked me if I want to play
the Rachmninoff sonata with them, one of them wanted to do Brahms F
major too...

Re:

Yeah...well, I don't have
the time to do any concerts until August, I have to much to do
before then. Saint-Sans a minor with orchestra in like five weeks
or so, and then a lunch concert with Kol Nidrei and Saint-Sans
cello sonata #1 the week after that, then some performances of
Mozart's horn concerto #2 and Pierrot Lunaire (Schnberg) and some
Haydn trumpet concertos a couple of weeks after that...then I have
the whole summer to learn both the Miaskovskij concerto and the
Dvork...
I'm planning to do my HUGE recital program in September or so,
including:
Rachmaninoff, sonata Brahms, F major Franck,
sonata Schubert, "Arpeggione" sonata
I'll probably drop
dead just from all the practicing, but...I want to give it a try...

Then I consider myself to be in
possession of a very good recording.

Killer
Recital
I'd pay good money to hear your
recital that you are planning.
I hope you are planning an
intermission or two. It might take almost 3 hours!
Why such a
huge recital? Just because? If you can do it, more power to you. It
sounds great!
AND, I LOVE the Miaskovky Concerto. You've
chosen some great music.

All in
one program?!?!?
4 of the best sonatas for cello, but
all in one sitting? I don't know who it will be hardest on: you, the
pianist, or the audience!

Re: All

I'm with Zambo on this - I'm a bit
amazed. I would only do one major romantic sonata on any given
recital - and try to round out the program with other styles of
music. But 4 big ones? Both the Frank and the Brahms have been major
bears for me to pull off in recitals by themselves, with only minor
accessory pieces. Why not some other styles of music, instead of
just a ton of romantic cello? If you love the stuff, great, but
you've set yourself up for a LOT of work to do it right, and it's
going to be a major marathon, for both you and the audience.

Well...I guess this is just
my way of going to the limits all the time, I want to try and do it,
I know it's going to be very hard on both me, the pianist and the
audience, but...I still want to do it...
Played in masterclass today, we have one individual lesson
every week and then we have one masterclass every week to, I played
Saint-Sans today, I guess it was okay. The other cellists played
Elgar concerto, Kol Nidrei, Bach C major and Britten
sonata.

Re:
Killer Recital
I just want to try it and
see if I can survive all the practicing...
There will be an intermission in the program, probably just one
in the middle. Yes, I like the Miaskovskij too, now my teacher
told me at our masterclass today, that it would probably be a better
idea to play Dvork, so...I guess I'll have to work on Miaskovskij
on my own...but, Dvork isn't that bad...
I have to go now and rehearse for my recital on May 22, we're
doing Kol Nidrei and Saint-Sans sonata in C minor.
