The
Oscars... starring Ma and Perlman???
I'm watching the Oscar pre-show
(sorry, can't help it, it's a terrible addiction) and just saw two
of our favorite classical musicians... Yo-Yo Ma and Itzak Perlman.
Ma was backpacking his cello, no leaving it in a cab or rolling on
the red carpet this time. It was nice to notice that the announcers
on WGN actually knew the names of these people!! For those of you
who have yet to tune in to the show, both of these musicians are
going to perform bits of the movie scores up for nomination,
including Tan Dun's work for Crouching Tiger Hidden
Dragon.
Ma's cello was touted as one of the "accessories of
the evening." I guess we're all very fashionable,
then!!
Another television note... the son, Nicholas Tzavaras,
of the woman portrayed in "Music of the Heart", Roberta Guaspari, is
now the new cellist in the Shanghai Quartet.

They
did well!
Too bad Goldie messed up when she
introduced them and their arrangement could have been a bit better
also.

Which of his cellos did Yo Yo play?
It sounded like his Strad.

Re:
oscars
I was wondering which cello he used
as well. My vote would go for the Strad. Please correct me if I am
mistaken but he has the Davidov, is that correct? That is what it
sounded like to me. I tuned in just long enough to see them, then
turned it off!

Strad?
I don`t think it was his strad. A
few days ago somebody reportet in the Du Pré subject that he changed
the Davidov Strad setup into a baroque one. I was not able to watch
the show, but I cannot imagine him playing this kind of music on a
baroque instrument... Perhaps he played his Montagnana, also a nice
choice...

Perlman was the one with the strad
and i'm pretty sure Ma had his montagnana.

Re: It

The oscar people must be wrong. They
probably wrote stradivarius b/c no normal person would ever know
montagnana.

- me too
We have a running joke in my orch.
about "what fingering are you going to use" and usually the answer
is just 1 or maybe 2 - and then on national TV Yo-Yo actually did
it.

His
Thumb Position?
I also saw the Oscars last night,
and you will see from my comment that I don't get out too much. They
had a few close ups, and I noticed when Ma played in the upper
positions that his fingers were straight out, his thumb didn't seem
to be in any particular position, however he was doing lots of
glissando, if that matters. This is how I naturally want to play,
and how I do play when I just attack things on my own. However, all
the books I'm studying on thumb pos. speak of the curved fingers
exclusively! What's up?

I hadn't read the posts from Sarah
and Tracie before I posted about thumb position. So others noticed
that too!

I wonder if anyone archived my level
knuckles thread?
Also keep in mind that Yo Yo has very long
fingers, some of what you are seeing is a bit of an optical
illusion. There are some bends in his knuckles but it's mainly the
third finger that stretches out straight.
What's more
interesting to me is what part of the fingertip he plays on.

Christopher!
In another thread there is much
contemplation about why normal people don't know what a cello
is.

What about his "kablammo" left hand
position in the upper registers?
I thought one of his fingers
was telling off Hollywood.

It's not archived, but that thread
(or one on the same subject, anyway) appeared in part in one of the
ICS newsletters; I'll see if I can find which one.

Cellisima, I loved your restrained
use of understatement regarding the Strad vs. Montagnana, "also a
nice choice"! Oh, to have to make that choice!

His
Vibrato!
I also noticed that when he played
in the upper positions with his fingers straight, that his vibrato
motion was at a 45 degree angle to the finger board. This is also
how I approach it when I play in that way, but I thought I was
weird! Maybe there's hope for me yet! Or is it just that when your a
famous virtuoso, you can do whatever the heck you what.... Or maybe
he knew cellist's would be watching??

Yo-Yo
is just unique
Let's face it folks, Yo-Yo is a
force unto himself. I've seen him play a lot of stuff, and while he
sweats like crazy, he never sweats over a technical problem. He just
plays...! But he sweats buckets sometimes putting his soul into the
music. He is just great! Yo-Yo fan. drcello

Thumb
position
I wouldn't use that performance as a
teaching guide! You might also have noticed that he stood up halfway
at one point while he was playing and then sat back down again. Why
is he doing those things? Who knows? But he is so good he can do
just about anything and it sounds great. Jacqueline Du Pre did a lot
of unorthodox things as well. Those things worked for her, but won't
work for most people.

A friend once shared with me the tip
his teacher gave about Ma: "You can listen to him, but don't watch
his technique!"
I haven't been fortunate enough to watch this
marvel yet! sounds awfully fun!
