Desperately-needed new thread
So; where's everybody from? What's
your cello's name? Who wrote the "Haydn" concerto? How 'bout those
Canadians? Whatever happened to Miriam Gendron? Do people with small
hands play with a smaller sound? How much should I charge for
lessons? What's your favorite concerto? What's the best kind of A
string? Is Starker a cold player? What's all this about a concerto
by Korngold? When is Mom coming back?

Ahhhhh, what a relief!! I'm from
Chicago and I've lived in the area all of my life except for the
nine years that I played in other orchestras (Winnipeg, Manitoba and
Cleveland). The instrument I currently enjoy playing is a Carl
Becker which, like me, is from Chicago. The cello was made in 1918.
My preferred A-String: Chromcor plus medium. People on the board
already know my feelings about Starker and, in my opinion, his new
recording of the Rachmaninoff Sonata proves my point about C O L
D!!!!! Brrrrr. I think that small hands do not produce small sounds,
I love the Korngold Concerto, and I do hope MOM doesn't stay away
too long!
Nice to get back to cello stuff----in spite of
"old" subjects. Bye

cello
conundrum
In my desire to see the board return
to cello related topics, I will share my upcoming cello dilemma and
perhaps some people will have some good advice for me.
I
have been only playing cello for a year now and have loved every
minute of it - well, almost. I do
take weekly lessons. At the end of September, however, I have a 3
month military assignment in the Virginia area. The first part of
this stay involves the type of training that would make it
impossible to bring my cello with me from home. The second phase of
my stay will be more forgiving and should be permit me enough time
to resume cello practice. I am concerned about my playing - at this
early stage in my cello playing I am afraid I will lose ability
quickly. I am also concerned about having access to a cello while I
am there - it may be possible to get my cello there, but I wonder if
places will rent cellos on such a short term basis. My final concern
is that I will be without lessons for such a long period of time. I
imagine it would be hard to find someone willing to teach an adult
beginner on such a temporary basis.
Anyway, any thoughts
would be appreciated on this.

haha. I'm from Oklahoma, my cello's
name is Chloe, I have friends in Canada, never heard of Miriam
Gendron, people with small hands don't have a smaller sound, they
just might be a little flat more often, don't have a favorite
concerto (haven't heard many) my favorite A sting I've played with
so far was Jargar, never heard a Starker recording, never heard of
Korngold, I have no idea when mom is coming back. (gosh, I'm
boring.)

Re:
cello conundrum
hmmmm. I've been playing cello for 9
months, and will also have to stop for about 3 months. (due,
however, to marching band, not military service. )
what part of Virginia? If you are going to Quantico, then
you should be close to the Brobst Violin Shop in Alexandria. The
people are some of the friendliest I have met, and very helpful. I'm
not sure about whether they'll let you rent on a short-term basis,
but it's worth a shot. I played a cello there while I was on
vacation in June, and it was great. I played on a Giuseppe Renaldi
cello, which had a nice sound, and a gorgeous back!! their website
is: www.brobstviolins.com/
Hope
I've helped in some way. Good Luck.

Re:
Desperately-needed new thread
I'm from Gvle, Sweden. About
300 kilometers north of Stockholm. My cello doesn't have a name
yet, it was built in Venice in 1980 by Antonio G. (or maybe it's S,
I'm not sure) da Monte. I really love my cello, it has a very
powerful sound, my teacher called it's tone "a laser beam"... I don't
care who wrote that C major concerto, it's great piece...it may as
well be another Dvorak
concerto... I don't
care... Canadians...I've only met one and that was a
conductor...his name is Glenn Mossop. I was principal in my schools
string orchestra when he conducted the Josef Suk Serenade and I sat
on 2nd chair in "The Nocturnal Dances Don Juanquixote" by Aulis
Sallinen. He was a great musician! I have never heard of Miriam
Gendron...I've only heard of a Maurice Gendron... Nope, I don't
think that people with small hand create a smaller sound. I do
belive that small people have a tendency to sound a little smaller
then big people. I guess it's a matter of how big your bow arm is... I don't
have one favorite concerto... I
have lots of them...the Dvorak, Elgar, both the Haydn concertos, the
two Sain-Sans concertos, Schelomo...there are so many great works
for cello... The best kind of A string I've played is probably
the Larsen Soloist Edition. I have two recordings with
Starker...one where he plays the two Brahms sonatas and one with
three of the Beethoven sonatas. I can't say that I like his playing
that much...Ok, he's great at technique and all that...but it just
doesn't communicate...The pianist, Gyrgy Sebk...well...I'm
speechless...I just don't know if it's good or bad... The
Korngold concerto is great!! I have no idea when Mom is coming
back...sorry...

Gar: Did you know Marion Heller
when she played in Winnipeg? It's a long time ago, but hey...my
standpartner in Spoleto, Andrew Eckard, also had an old
Becker...didn't leave me particularly awed, and a real finicky
instrument to boot. Someone told me the new Beckers cost like
65K...is that possible?! Played a really bad Faust yesterday,
7-hour rehearsal for tomorrow's concert, at the old, huge Paramount
Theater in now-rundown-as-hell Asbury Park, NJ, and as luck would
have it the roof was leaking...on me and my cello. Only bad spot in
the small pit, required major reorganizing to avoid (props guys
didn't have anything big enough to sling over my head, near the
apron)...Anton Coppola, Ryan's best buddy, is still gungho and sings
(not quite like Don Ho), way too much, vigorous octagenarian who is
dedicated to music...refreshing, if taxing. How about a thread,
Bob, about Dounis viz cellists? Who would be a good person to start
with on this, assuming Neikrug doesn't read our board too much...and
of his students out there stalking the Board?

Neikrug/ Met settlement?
Hey has anyone heard Neikrug play
when he was young or a CD from then? He was supposed to have been
really spectacular- but the only performances I have heard of him
were very poor- he was already quite old and still trying to play
the Paganini concerto.. Would love to hear a young
recording.
Justin- the new union paper says the Met settled
in May on a 5 year deal ending at $1902 in the final year- I thought
they were still negotiating? do they have a separate scale for the
associate musicians?
It's true about the new Beckers- as they
say, you can fool some of the people all of the
time....

1) California 2) Doesn't have
one. Never really thought about naming it. 3) I haven't the
slightest idea. Is this the C Major or D Major? 4) I like Laura's
answer! Has anyone seen the movie "Canadian Bacon"? 5) Who?
Probably before my time. 6) I would guess not. 7) $500/minute
or $0.25/day 8.) Prokofiev Op. 125 9) Jargar I guess. Those
are the only strings I've played on when I sort of knew what I was
doing. 10) I don't think so, but I've never really listened with
that idea in mind. 11) I have no idea. 12) As soon as she

I've been an orch member in New Orleans, San Antonio, & Houston.
(Maybe Phoenix in the future?)
I call it "Joe," 'cause that's
who made it.
I think Haydn wrote all of the Haydn Concertos,
except the one by Popper. (The D Major is not like other pieces I've
seen by Kraft.)
The dynasty is over. I'm rooting for the
Redwings again next year. (Am I on the same question?)
Miriam
Gendron?
Did Shirley Tabochnik have small hands? One of you
"old timers" from Chicago tell us about Shirley. Please!?
Please!?
As much as you can! Your future pricing in your
community will be limited by your starting price.
Proko -
Symphony Concertante
Larsen, unless you want it to last more
than a month or so.
Yes, but great in his own
way.
Fine piece. It's too bad orchestras have only 1 cellist
a year as soloist so we could hear this kind of rep.
Who
knows? Mine doesn't like to fly.

Re:
Neikrug/ Beckers
Yeah, the new Beckers are priced
like the old ones! While cello shopping a few years ago I tried a
Becker from the 1960s. It's best and, unfortunately, only trait was
volume. I have heard a couple of fine Beckers, though. My teacher
got one when he came out of retirement for the second time. Also, a
Becker from the 19-teens was bought by a Houston cellist a few years
ago. They both sounded great. Power and quality.
My teacher,
Joe Saunders, spoke very highly of Neikrug. Would he have played
with him in the NBC Symphony? Alas, I am not familiar with any
Neikrug recordings. (As an aside) Do you know the Sonata for solo
cello by his son? It's dedicated to the father, but i've heard it
described as having been written AT him. (It's a monstrously
difficult piece and they didn't get along, I understand.)

Beautiful B.C. He's not telling.
Does it matter? Well, I married one, then gave birth to two
... they're all right! Who? That's my excuse. Depends on if
you teach or not, if you show up or not, etc. Bach violin
concertos are flavor of the month here. My cello and I like
Jargar. Yes, refreshingly cool!
Did
somebody say popcorn? Maybe Pat discovered the most wonderful
accoustics in her new house and can't put that cello down long
enough to check in here!

Hi all!! I'm glad to see I'm not
the only one here that is not from america - I am from Israel, my
cello's name is Zimmer (long story) and I bought him in Russia in
1989 from a musician who desperately wanted to leave the country.
(The cello is German). (well, it is a "him" not an it, don't ask me
why..)
going back to the military debate - I just wanted to
say that I was in the military for 2 years and did not touch the
cello, but some hard work and dedication made up for it, so don't
despare!!
Finally, on behalf of all the small-people out
there - people!!!what happened to the politically correct code?
Aren't we size-challenged or something? (Just kidding!). It would be
easier to play the cello if i had a larger hand, but hey, c'est la
vie! Yael

Re:

ok i have a few minutes before i
have to go to walmart for another boring 8 hour shift
here we
go
I am from canada
My cello's name is Mr. Happy,
because one day in orchestra, i took some kids art project of a
happy face and stuck it on my cello. Haha u should have seen the
conductors face when he saw it...it was priceless hehe
Who
wrote the haydn concerto??? me of course!!
Yeeeaaa
Canadians!!! Im a canadian, and no i dont live in an igloo and have
to ski to school....hehe but i live toronto, everywhere north of
toronto lives in igloos, hehe just kidding
Miriam
who???
I dont think people with smaller hands play less of a
sound, i think they can play a bit faster then people with big
hands, but might have a problem with some postions, and they might
have to use a lighter bow
I think the price that u charge for
lessons, should reflect on how experienced you are. I have had two
teachers. One has a bacalers degree from Queens university (in
canada), and played with the Niagra Orchestra. She charged about $30
per lesson. The teacher i hvae now, has a masters degree from Yale,
and was principal cellist, for a couple of orchestras, and musicals,
and he played in New york, but i dont know where. He charges $50 per
lesson, and is well worth the money
My fave concerto ( i have
three), are the dvorak, elgar, and haydn in C
The best kind
of A string, i think is the larsen a string...well thats what i use,
hehe
When is Mom coming back????? my mom is coming back
later, haha
Oh oh!!! time to go to walmart bye
everyone!! Rebecca
p.s. word of advice, dont eat chocolate cupcakes for
breakfast, they make u extremly hyper!!!!

Re:

So; where's everybody from? Born
in Boston, have lived in Green Bank, West Virginia; LaCanada,
California; Ithaca, New York; Arecibo, Puerto Rico; Oberlin, Ohio;
Richmond, Virginia; and most recently and longest in Nashville,
Tennessee.
What's your cello's name? I don't have a name
I call it, or rather them - it's basically Frirsz cello or chinese
cello. Cello A, or cello B.
Who wrote the "Haydn" concerto?
Anton Kraft? Nah, I played a concerto once that was really
written by Kraft, and it was REALLY bad.
How 'bout those
Canadians? Personnally, I think a Monte Christo is the best
sandwich out there, but a good BLT is hard to beat. Any sandwich
with swiss cheese in it is worth eating.
Whatever happened
to Miriam Gendron? Who?
Do people with small hands play
with a smaller sound? Sometimes, but not always. Many people with
big hands have a small sound too. Does size count?
How much
should I charge for lessons? At least 100$US, if not more.
What's your favorite concerto? Walton
What's the
best kind of A string? One that stays in tune and isn't too
twangy. I prefer Jargar fortes for this - the larsens are nice, but
don't stay in tune as well.
Is Starker a cold player? I
don't think so.
What's all this about a concerto by
Korngold? I was in the pit for a ballet production of Robin
Hood, and they borrowed many of the musical ideas from the old Errol
Flynn movie, which was composed and orchestrated by Korngold, so we
played a ton of Korngold stuff. That was a hard show! This has
nothing to do with a cello concerto, except I'm sure it's hard, too.
When is Mom coming back? How should I know?
Thank
you, have a nice day. The check is in the mail. I dug 20 fence post
holes yesterday, and won't be able to walk for a week. Only 21 more
to go.
