Tuning...
Okay, I manged to tune my cello with
the pegs (fine tuners were to their limits). May I have the PegHeds
now???! BTW,
whoever invented those pegs...what did he think who plays a cello?
Hercules? I really though that G-string peg would never
move...

Don't forget to reset your
finetuners, so you don't have to use the pegs all the time. I screw
mine about half way out so after I tune with the pegs, I can fine
tune for quite a while. Pucka

fine
tuners
My last teacher, Pantaleyev would
always tell me to keep the fine tuners as free as possible. He said
that if they were turned all the way in that they pull the strings
down with more pressure than a normal setup would have. The result
would be a slightly dampened sound. I think there's some truth to
this as I've discovered.
Just a thought for you. RemRem, have
you reloctaed yet?

Re:
fine tuners
Yes, my fine tuners are back in
middle position now. I guess it's gets easier to tune with the pegs
if they are used more often. No, I'm still in Germany. Deadline
for my Diploma thesis is August 25th. So I'm at home now, playing
cello at day and writing at night
The
decision about the scholarships will be in October and if I get one
I will be moving to Seattle in November.

pegs
and Pegheds
Do make sure your pegs are fit
perfectly. Tuning with pegs shouldn't be that hard and a "stuck
fast" peg might mean more than just seasonal swelling. What a
difference it made to me when someone fit my cello with pegs of good
dense ebony tapered and fit perfectly to the holes. Question
about Pegheds, though. What about servicing any parts which wear or
break, etc? Sounds like a good idea but what about the longevity and
maintenance? Also, does it alter the value of the instrument? Can
they be removed without evidence later?

Re:
Pegheds
Liz, I think the Pegheds are too new
a technology/too newly-available a technology to really have an idea
re their longevity and the integrity of their mechanism. As to
reducing an instrument's value, I guess only your cello vet knows
for sure! I believe they can be removed w/o evidence if the vet
didn't have to enlarge the peg holes when installing the Pegheds. I
love my P'heds and have no hesitation in recommending them to others
similarly-situated, i.e., folks w/instruments that aren't
"high-end."
Cheers, MaryK

p'heds
My cello looks no different with the
pegheds since he used my pegs to make them. Not only are they easy
to use by My cello has been in tune for a month now with no
adjustments needed. Getting rid of the fine tuners seems to have
opened the sound up more also.
