Okay,
let's hear it - what instrument do you play?
Let's get some information from
everybody here - what instrument (or instruments) do you
play?
To be fair, I'll start:
My main cello is a
French instrument, probably the work of either Nicolas Vuillaume
(not Nicolas Francois) or Charles Jacquot.
My three main bows
are Louis Bazin, Andre Richaume, and Jean Dominique Adam.
I
also have a fantastic 5-string violoncello piccolo by Peter Rombouts
circa 1685 that I use for baroque concerts. My baroque bow is by
Ralph Ashmead.
Who's next?

Okay, I'll venture in! My main (just
had to say it; I only have one cello) instrument is my 1999 Doetsch
cello and my sole bow is a Jos. Schneider pernambuco w/octagonal
stick. I have been very pleased with both so far. They are probably
more than I need at present, but I really feel that they both helped
me get off to a good start. That and the combo of a great teacher
and my enthusiasm...

Sure, I'll jump in. I have a 1996
cello from Anton Krutz's shop KC Strings. Lovely little cello with
wonderful depth of sound. My bow is of unknown german origin which
has been placed at around 40 to 60 years old. Similar to what Betsy
said, they're both probably more than I need right now, but I sure
feel grateful to have them.

I have a 7/8 cello from a luthier in
Regensburg/Germany. I called both luthiers I found in the yellow
pages but both denied to have made a 7/8 in the last few years so I
think my poor little cello is an orphan. My bow is a normal round
stick Paesold bow. I really love my cello but I think about
getting another bow around september...we'll see.

I have a 1971 E.H.Roth cello, and a
Coda Classic bow. I'd like to upgrade eventually because I've played
instruments that are easier to play than mine is, and have more
depth of sound. But it's still a very good cello.

My cello was made in 1871 and I
presume that it is German, made by a ? Koenig or Hoenig? fecit
Pestini 1871 38 yr.? The label is very faded and difficult to read.
I have been trying to find someone with the books by Jalovec on
German and Austrian Violin makers to do a lookup for me, but have
not had much luck as yet.
My cello is interesting in that it
has double purfling on the front and back in the style of Maggini,
an early maker from Bresia. My current bow is an octagonal, W. Ernst
bow from Switzerland.

My cello is a '98 or so Wayne Burak
Chinese-American cello, 7/8 size. I'm very happy w/it. Have had some
"upgrades" done: fingerboard planed, longer soundpost installed,
replaced its Akusticus tailpiece w/a Harmonie (made a big diff!),
switched from original equipment Helicores to Larsens and
Spirocores. It's a nice instrument for me; looks good, sounds
good.
Bow is something crappy from Shar. Next time I have $2K
(ha) I'm going bow shopping.
Cheers, Mary

Hi all,
Well, I have a 1998
cello by David Mahov, (Michael Goronok shop) Cleveland. I love her
sound (full and balanced), even if she is a little plain looking.
She's sort of a honey color with very slight flaming on the sides
and back. Her name is Emma. She likes Larsens on top and Helicores
on the bottom. My all-the-time bow is an octagonal bow by Egidius
Dorfler, and I forget who made my back-up bow. I never use it, only
when I have to.

My
cello
Anyone want to trade?
I have
a completely unidentified rental. It's kinda red in color and has a
rather poor tone. Lately it's been sounding better, but still has
it's problems. The string are way too high which makes thumb
position almost impossible. Maybe this summer I'll get that fixed.
But it's a rental instrument, so I can't do too much to it. It looks
like someone dropped it once -- the bottom is glued together like a
puzzle and it has war wounds under the bridge like the strings
collapsed and hit the top really hard once. The finish is all
crackly and has rubbed off on some of the edges.
I actually
bought my bow (my cello came with a horrible fiberglass bow). It has
the name "Stiener" on it and is brazilwood I believe. I like my bow.
It's a good weight for me and is kinda pretty.
Well, maybe in
a year or two I'll put all my pennies together and buy a cello. I've
been renting this one for about 5 years now. I'm kinda attached to
it like you get with a castaway dog that shows up on your porch one
afternoon. If the neighbor wanted it, you'd be thrilled to give it
up, but if it has no where else to go . . . .

Hello all. Haven't posted anything
on the boards in quite a while. (Though I lurk almost everyday.)
Anyway, I have a Chinese made Montanagna style cello and a JP
Gabriel bow. I've had them both for a year now and still find them
lovely and gratifying to play.

My cello is a chinese cello that has
a beautiful orange-reddish brown varnish and the most incredible
flamed maple back and sides. What sold me on it though, was the
warm, dark tone that it has. My bow is an octagonal stick stamped
with Erich Steiner. If anyone knows anything about the bow I'd be
very happy to hear it.

Hard to type while holding sleeping
baby.
Nicolas Frirsz, 1997, fantastic. Huge montagnana
copy.
Chinese montagnana style, 1998, by Xue-Chang Sun.
Bows by William Salchow, 1985, and Michael Duff, 1997.

I have a 1970 Franz Kirschnek German
cello, which I adopted from my teacher's rental corps. He's nicely
flamed and nicely dinged. If anyone knows anything about the maker I
would be interested to know more. The bow I'm using is a friend's
no-name ??? which has spoiled me from going back to the old Glasser.
Saving my pennies and I might just get a new bow someday!

im just a beginner, so my cello and
my bow arent all that nice. my cello is a 1999 Glaesel student
model, i dont know what my bow is, it came with the instrument. not
very nice. just a little plywood instrument, but still for a
beginner, you really don't need a super-expensive REALLY nice
instrument. maybe someday i'll be able to upgrade, . .
alot!
ok, i wrote that post a while ago, so now i'm revising.
I bought a new bow recently. it is by Paesold. I guess that's all i
can really tell you about it, because that's all i know. it DOES
make my instrument sound MUCH nicer than the cheap Glasser
fiberglass bow that came with the
cello.

Instrument do you play?
This has been an interesting line of
responses. I recently sold a Gofriller cello I inherited from my
family which I loved and played most of my professional career. I
traded it in for a Carl Becker Sr. cello from 1932 and also an Eric
Benning cello from 1998. They are both much more powerful
instruments than the Gofriller and suit themselves more to soloist
work. The Becker is a phenomenal instrument and the beautiful
varnish patina is second to none. The Benning instrument, having
been made in the same style as the Becker, is also fantastic with
actually a little more growl to the voice in the lower registers,
which I like. The Spirocore Tungstens help as well. I play on a
Sartory cello bow for the nicer jobs and a H.R. Pfretzschner cello
bow for my regular work horse jobs. The Pfretzschner is every bit as
good in my estimation, it's just not as valuable.

Re:

I have a French Factory-Handmade
cello, about 120 years old. It is rather a garish colour, and
covered in dings and donks and has three borah holes (the borah have
been zapped though, so it won't disintergrate) in the neck. I
recently had the fingerboard replaced, new pegs , new bridge and
something done to the neck.
When I'm solvent I want a new
tailpiece, for aesthetic reasons as much as anyother.
It has
Larsen D, Spirocore G and C, and the A is Jargar that my teacher
gave me in a time of need.
My "second instrument" is a Korean
Shimro, the less said the better.
My bow I just bought the
other day. It is light coloured Pernambouco, O/stick with a little
pattern stamp in the frog. It is a Werner, with another name stamped
on the frog which is hard to read. Very nice strong stick, lots of
hair and fast responce. Unfortunately it rendered me
bankrupt.
My violin (just in case anybody wanted to know ) is
handmade by a Chinese man in Chicago, and I think that the maker is
dead. It was made way back last century in 1995! It is a lovely
colour - quite blonde, with a beautiful grain on the back. Its pegs,
tailpiece and chinrest are rosewood. The pegs and tailpeice are that
faux-Baroque style. It has all Helicores. I LOVE MY VIOLIN! My
bow is by John Clutterbuck, and I like it very much.
Now, do
you want to hear about my penny whistle? Right then, it is. . .
.

my
turn
I just recently received my cello
from stringworks, I got the artist model. I am very pleased with the
instrument, sounds great and looks wonderful.
I went shopping
in albuquerque for a cello and found some great german instruments,
only none were in my price range. Then I found stringworks, and
decided to buy one of their instruments, I am really glad I did.
This instrument suits me wonderfully and has great response and the
tone is warm . I really like that the low tones on the c string
really sing.
I am currently using a johann krausch bow, my
first pernambuco bow, I am liking this new bow quite a bit. so much
better than my old fiberglass bow. Makes all that right arm
movement quite a bit easier.
Oh by the way I think my
instrument is a 2000. he he.

Well, I should have come to you in
the first place, Steve, with my Montagnana question. You have a few
of them, so perhaps you could clue me in as to what the differences
are. I know the looks, but the tone is what I am curious about.
Dothe larger dimensions affect the sound, or are you attracted to
the aesthetics?
As for my cello, it's a German Bachle, only
about a year old. Currently nicknamed "Woody" until something more
fitting comes along. Bow, I'm looking... really liked the
Berg.
As for typing with sleeping babies, that's a picture I
can relate to. In the old days with babies, now with cats who manage
to drape themselves. And I never cease to want to accommodate them,
which probably accounts for the condition of my keyboard.

Cats
and Keyboards - Ellen
So you do that too, accommodate your
cats, I mean?? Nice, isn't it?? Have you ever noticed the amount of
cat hair that accumulates in your keyboard, though? Whew!! I blew it
out w/some canned air recently, and the fur was flyin'!! Gee, do you
s'pose the cat hair gets into our cellos??
:)
