Re:
Benjamin Zander
Ben has been toiling for years in
Boston with his pet project, the Boston Philharmonic, specializing
in Mahler symphonies among other things. He is a fine musician and
many players young and old would take him as their leader over Seiji
Ozawa in a heartbeat. A friend of mine, fiddler and psychiatrist,
began playing with him a good 20 years ago while a Harvard student
and still speaks lovingly of some performances (several have been
recorded, I believe, don't knowe if they're commercially available).
I played once and enjoyed the experience. Ben apparently developed
some physical problem with his hands many years ago; I believe it
had to do with not being able to callus, which necessitated stopping
his playing career..he was a fine cellist in his day. Much
sought-after as a pedagogue and spirit in the Boston area
still.

Re:

He conducted the NZ National Youth
Orchestra last year, and everybody seemed to like him. Unfortunately
I wasn't in it, due to Chicken Pox.
