Audition Suggestions?
Hi, I am getting ready to audition
for my music major at Towson University in Maryland and the only
guideline is to play something comparable to a Vivaldi Sonata. As
far as I can see, that could be anything! Thanks
for any suggestions! Shayla

Re:

That does leave your options pretty
wide open. Here's a couple things to keep in mind when you are
picking your audition repertoire:
1) Play up to your
technical/musical level, but NOT beyond it. Playing something that
your comfortable with will make it that much easier to show them how
awesome of a cellist you are.
2) Most audition panels are
interested in your potential for greatness, not whether or not you
are great now. This ties in with #1. Play your best, pay a lot of
attention to detail in your practicing. Don't worry about a missed
note or two during your audition. They know you're
nervous.
3) Email the cello professor (Ms. Barcsyzk, right? I
met her at the WCC) and ask her about audition repertoire, ie. what
level you are at and what she would expect to here from someone at
your playing level, etc. It never hurts to make personal contact,
not only for auditions but for every job you ever apply
for.
4) As for specific pieces, sonatas aren't always the
greatest choice, because if you can't have a pianist, there's a lot
of the music missing. Bach has pros & cons: You have a lot more
freedom to express yourself and show your greatness, but many people
(maybe the audition panel) have very specific ideas about how it
should sound and your ideas might not be the same. Concertos and
short pieces are usually pretty safe, but don't count on being able
to play an entire movement. Sometimes they only ask for a few lines!
Make sure you have all your scales and probably arpeggios ready to
go - it's usually assumed that you know these and can play them when
asked. It would probably be a good idea to have an etude prepared,
too, in case they ask if you have one to play (happened to me...
fortunately someone told me this same thing and I was
ready!).
Hope some of this helps!

Re:

Thanx Laura for the insight! I
have a quick question for you, since you met Ms. Barcsyzk. My last
cello teacher told me to never tell her that I studied with her (she
took lessons from her and they really did not get along, I guess)
therefore I am kinda apprehensive about contacting her. So I was
wondering if she is really that hard to talk to. I'm also
looking at maybe doing the cello version of Monti's Csardas or even
Breval's Sonata. I decided to stay on at ye olde community college
another semester to really get ready. Also, the cello teacher I
mentioned above decided I should move onto another teacher and so I
want to get used to this new person, which I only had a week to line
up. So much
for a summer to relax! Shayla

Re:

My only chance to talk with her was
at the closing reception at the Congress, when she sat at the same
table next to me and Ryan Selberg (another ICS regular). Ms.
Barcszyk (sp?) was very easy to talk to, very nice and genuinely
interested in my ambitions and offers for help with the next
Congress. I wouldn't worry about contacting her!
As for "so
much for a summer to relax", a big HEAR HEAR!!! I feel your
pain.
-Laura... who should really be studying for two
exams tomorrow, but is putting it off, and putting it off, and
putting it off... don't listen to me! bad study example!! aaargh.
this is what happens when you spend your summer at school.

Does the name Pamela DeVier (Webb)
mean anything to you, cello Angel? A long shot, but I used to live
in Maryland and was the Assitant Principal of the Maryland Symphony
Orchestra (while Barry Tuckwell was condiuctor).
Just
wondering....

Re:
Audition Suggestions?
Hi, No, I have never heard that
name before. I have studied with Natasha Matveeva (she's the one I
mentioned in a prev. post) and I am going to meet Andrew Shaud this
week. They are both Peabody grads. I really wish I didn't have to
find a new teacher, I kinda like to get on with one person and stay
on So here's
a quick question for everyone, how do you stay focused when having
to change teachers? When I played flute I changed teachers once, but
they were good friends so the styles were similar and I was younger
so I think that helped. Now I am trying to deal with school and
getting ready to transfer so this is really REALLY unnerving me. I
know I'll probably meet this teacher and like him, but until then I
have to bite my nails!
