WOW!
The New Edition of Bach's Cello Suites
Just when you thought it was safe to
browse the shelves of your favorite music store, Barenreiter has
just published a sensationally compiled edition of our beloved Six
Suites. Don't worry, this edition will not replace your personal
favorite. It's simply in a class all to itself. Not only do you get
the "Scholarly Critical Performing Edition" (which I seriously doubt
anyone will want to mark up with fingerings and bowings) but you are
privy to no fewer than five facsimlie sources from Anna Magdalena
Bach's manuscript to the First Paris Edition of the early 19th
century. PLUS there's a 40 page discourse on performance practise
and related historical information (particularly useful in
understanding how the dances were conceived).
I was surprised
that it was not especially expensive, given the price of important
text material these days, coming in at less than $60-if memory
serves.
Trust me, I'm not a Barenreiter agent, just a cellist
who was most excited to find such an amazing resource for future
study. I think it's the most exciting thing available to cellists
since the first Casals recordings of this great music.

Re:

I've been wanting to see this
edition since I heard tales of it from people who attended the
WCCIII. Am I correct in assuming that it is more of a reference than
something you would actually play off of? I'm excited to see one of
these, and hopefully acquire one in the future, although, there are
already so many choices to be made when playing Bach, that I fear
being confronted with all that information would simply serve to
make my head spin even faster!
Thanks for the
review.
hmm... btw... do you have 2 heads?

Barenreiter Bach
I recently picked up this edition. I
think it's great, especially for the facsimile editions. Now I can
recycle my photocopies (of photocopies of photocopies.......) of the
facsimiles. It was $45 off the shelf here in L.A.

Re:

it is really GREAT!
you can
actually play from some of the facsimiles, some are more
study-material...
and it is very confusing, but it gives me
lots of ideas about bowing, frasing etc. I use my "old" Baerenreiter
to play from but half off the time I end up with a facsimile in each
hand and one on the stand, which makes it a little complicated to
play. O well, I always wanted some extra
hands.
