How to
get a Strad.
OK, this is a serious question, but
there's a lot of flexibility on the replies. Replies can be serious
or humorous.
Q. Since I don't have several million dollars to
spend, how can I acquire a fine cello like a Stradivarius, Gofriller
or Montagnana?
A(s).
1. Win the $60M lotto 2.
Convince Bill Gates to be my benefactor 3. 4. 5.

Just
upgrade your current cello.....
......all it takes is paper, glue,
and the ability to imitate others' handwriting.
Why
shouldn't yours be number 3,196 of Stradivari's 90 cellos?

seriously?
Most of us have read of situations
like this: artist is allowed to use a great instrument, loves it and
credits it with success, can't buy it, how sad . . . but I'm kind of
skeptical about the importance of a musician becoming too
preoccupied with an instruments' being name X. I don't want to
support that investment market. Will a boycott ever work, to deflate
the prices? Let the Strads stay in the hands of nonplaying investors
while artists play other very fine but not-famous instruments? Sad,
hopefully not too unromantic . . . but maybe it's worthy of
discussion among the funnier and more romantic suggestions.

Re: How

There is a Seattle cellist who plays
on a $1 million cello and he doesn't own it. He found a bunch of
investors to chip in on the price of the cello. I presume that they
are willing to do this because they expect the value of the
instrument to increase, i.e. they expect to make money when it is
re-sold. I would guess that they are impressed by his playing as
well. So, I suppose you need to seek out investors.

Re: How

I agree with Liz. I'm sure there are
many fine contemporary cellos out there, and it's probably to our
advantage to hear more about them( which ones are they, and who made
them), rather than dwell endlessly on one particular luthier, whose
work only a select few will ever own or play. From what I
understand, it seems as though many of Strads original cellos have
been reworked to make them playable again, so who's to say they
sound just like they did originaly. Anyway, Iv'e never been a fan of
hype. What's right and what's good, is what's pleasing to our ears,
the rest is dribble. I get a little miffed when I hear some folks
say things like "a cello with a bright sound has a violinistic
sound", meaning it's a bad thing. I think a cello is violinistic
just as a violin is celloistic, they are simular instruments, and to
say only cello's with a particular sound are proper, is improper. I
could really get going on this, but I'll stop now! Len

Modern
Cellos
Hi Len,
I'm all for fine
modern instruments. I'm quite a proponent of them. My last 3 cellos
were modern instruments.
There may be some who do "dwell
endlessly" on this issue of Strads, Gorfillers and Montagnanas. Not
I, I just began to ponder it as kind of a dream today. I certainly
wouldn't refuse the opportunity to acquire one, would you? I'm just
curious about how some people who can't afford to buy their own
instrument (like a Strad) are able to get their hands on
one.
Anyway, I've gotten some interesting replies.
One
of them was to marry a rich old woman. Too late on that, I married a
beautiful, not rich, young lady already.... on to the next
idea...being a dishonest NYC Taxi driver? Isn't that a redundancy? (sorry,
that wasn't very nice, now, was it?)

Re:
Modern Cellos
Sorry Paul, I didn't mean to get so
serious. Your probably right about the taxi drivers in NYC. I wonder
if the driver knew the cello was in the trunk, what would he have
done? And yes, I would like to own a Strad. And if I did, I'm sure I
would let everyone know it was the best cello in the world,
bar-none. Len

Re: How

You know what really makes me mad?
When you talk to someone and they think that cellos cost around
$100, it's sad! If I had the money, I probably wouldn't buy a Strad,
because the money could go towards a more worthy cause, like some
poor lad. I hate reading about how collectors buy paintings for
piles and piles of cash, when people are dying, living in conditions
that are rash. I would probably buy a cello that is just as nice,
and has a good sound, but for a cheaper price. I would however,
accept a Strad Cello if it were given/loaned to me...Assuming that I
am a good enough player to play in Carnegie. I have to go practice,
so my teacher won't scream, and afterwards, I will eat some Ice
cream (Cookies and Cream). ~Frank~

Totally off the subject, but Frank!
You should really try some o-cha ice cream. Green-tea flavored.
Trust me, it's like nectar of the gods.

Re: How

Scrape together around 30K, and get
Nicholas Frirsz to build you an instrument. Preferably his
montagnana model, but he can do a great gofriller model also. He can
probably do a strad model too. Trust me, you'll like it better than
the famous old name maker, and it'll be paid for in a lot less time!

Re: How

It's easy. Bid for one on ebay. A
couple of days after I paid over $100,000 for my Tourte, I saw one
on ebay for $8.

Oh
Cananda (sp.)
I know I spelled it wrong!
For some who might remember a huge scandal I started with a
removal of a post....In the removal notice I spelled it wrong this
way.
So, I was just kind of poking fun at myself and anyone
else who might get the inside joke.
Of course I know how to
spell Cananda!

Re: How

Thanks Frank,
I'll probably
give them a call when (if) I'm up to the level of Vadim Repin and
Maxim Vengerov! (Whenever that might be.)
Good to know such places exist. It might be fun to get to
play on one just for a couple of weeks though.
