Introductions?
I've kind of turned into a lurker
here, but I was wondering if everyone could introduce themselves?
School, major, how long you've played, anything else relevant or
interesting?
I'm actually starting my first year of med
school at George Wash. Univ. in DC, having just graduated with a
psych degree here. I only started playing a year and a half ago, but
my school's policy is that if you have an instrument (and pay the
$150 per semester fee, which is completely inconsequential compared
to tuition and fees) you can take private lessons. (I'd played in
4th/5th grades in public school, quitting because the flute was
quite a bit easier to carry home, and figured now was as good a time
as ever to start up again). I'll be continuing with lessons for as
long as I can, though I doubt I'll be able to play much at all once
classes begin. So I guess I don't really "fit" into this forum too
well, but I suppose I'm not exactly a cellist-by-night either.
Oh yeah, I just got married, to an extraordinary Romanian
guy I met in 1996, and my fabulous teacher, Lori Barnet, came all
the way out to Oregon from Wash. DC to play in the wedding. Even WE
got compliments on her playing. If anyone wants to know about
Romania (orphanages, "interesting" food, etc.), marriage, med
school, undergrad psychology stuff, Washington DC sightseeing, or
Oregon (beautiful summers and BERRIES!), I can help you out. I
probably couldn't add too much about anything cello-related yet...

Re:
Introductions
Hi all. I'm Kendra and I'm a
sophomore at Yale College, where I am a music major (BA, no BM here ) and also
do early childhood teacher prep. I play the cello and the trombone
(I'm a member of...). I've played the cello since I was nine, so
that makes it about...eh, 9, almost ten years. Wow, more than half
my life now. Cool. I'm also a member of the Yale Women's crew team.
Rowings a fun sport, you all should give it a try. This summer, I
taught crew to low-income New Haven children. It was sooo fun! I
also work for Yale's oral history department, which is a department
of the Yale School of Music that deals in oral interviews of
American composers and performers. Right now, I get to edit
interviews of guys (and gals) who were either in Duke Ellington's
band, or family, or good friends. It is so interesting. Well let's
see, what else? Well there doesn't seem to be that much to me: I
love music, I love crew, and I love sleep, though I won't be getting
much of that this year...I look forward to hearing what everyone
else has to say!
Always, Kendra

Re:
Introductions?
Ok, my name is Doug Wilber and I am
going into my fourth of five years at Lawrence University in
Appleton, Wisconsin. I study with Janet Anthony, and I am going for
a combined BM in performance and BA in philosophy. I have been
playing the cello since I was 8, about 13 years, and I am from
Massachusetts. I also dabble in the organ and sing from time to
time. 'Nuff said. Doug

HI all, my name is Mike and I am not
currently going anywhere, but I will probably be returning to
Lawrence for my 4th of five years in the winter term. I have played
for 13 or 14 years, since 3rd grade. ---Mike(aka norman)

Re:
Introductions?
I'm from Sweden, I'm 20 and
I first started to play the piano when I was about eight. I
started to play the cello when I was 16 and I have been going to two
different music schools now. In about three weeks or so I'm moving
to London, England to study at the Guildhall School of Music and
Drama where I'm going to be a music major (BMus). I love to play
with other people and I've had the privilege to be principal cellist
in many orchestras, one of those is the Nordic Youth Symphony
Orchestra. My favorite piece to play is probably the Prokofieff,
Op. 125 (Symphony Concerto). I played the first movement at an exam
at my last school and I really think that more people should
challenge this work. Ok, I know it's really, really hard and all
that, but...why not just try it?! I didn't think I would have a
chance to play one measure of it, but I did it...and all it took was
some practicing... Other
favorite pieces are the cello concertos by Dvorak, Elgar,
Schostakovich and Haydn. Then there's this great piece by the
Swedish composer Gösta Nystroem, Sinfonia Concertante for cello and
orchestra, it's truly a masterpiece! And I don't think that just
because it's Swedish...
Well...that's me...

Re:

I'm Dan Ortbals, and I am going to
be a junior at the University of Missouri - Columbia, majoring in
music performance. I've been playing the cello for about 10 years
(started in 4th grade, though I had a year of Suzuki violin). Hmmmm,
what else...?...I love to pick up random hobbies from time to time.
Past ones have been art, theater, juggling, yo-yo's, graphic design,
origami, fencing (for a semester), and Go. I'm sure there are
others, but I can't think right now. Columbia is actually not a
bad little town. It has its little quirks which I suppose are good
for a college town. Of course, I'm from St. Louis (which is where I
am right now), though I'll be going back to school in about a week
and a half. I'm really looking forward to this coming year...Got a
junior recital, new quartet I'll be playing in, get to see lots of
friends I haven't seen all summer. That's about it. bye.

Re:
Introductions?
I'm Laura. I'm from Michigan. I just
finished my first year at Western Michigan University as a music
performance/biology double-major (just earning the BM degree).
You'll probably be hearing from me in awhile, given med school might
be in my future. I've played cello since I was four-ish and also
took 9yrs of piano. I played flute for three years during elementary
school, but we didn't get along so I kicked the flute out of the
house.
What else do I do? I love drooling at the Hummer
dealership and the classic Corvette shows, 'collecting' all the
funky shoes I can find, writing whatever comes to mind, and I think
there's almost nothing better than travelling across the country at
the drop of a hat (something I did
recently).

Re:
Introductions?
Hi!!~ My name is Tata (I'm a
girl!). I'm Korean who just immigrated to Canada. I'm going to
attend The University of British Columbia (in Vancouver) and
majoring B.Music Education as a 1st yr. student. I started playing
cello when I was 14 which is about 4 years. Before playing cello, I
played piano for 10 years and flute for 2 years. I was going to
pursue as a med student but I changed my mind last year when I
attended the convention in Taiwan. Therefore, I really don't know
much about cello. I graduated high school this June in International
School Manila, Philippines. I lived in Philippines for 9 years and
in Australia for 2 years.
I had alot of hard time entering
to music school because I didn't have the enough techniques. I
bearly play Haydn Cello Concerto in C Major. I envy you guys because
you all seemed to have great talents.
I really hate
practicing! Do you all like practicing cello? It's hard to settle my
heart!~

Re:
Introductions?
Am I too old to be here? I am a 24
year old graduate student working toward my MM in Cello Performance
(already got the BA/Cello and English). Other than
cello/music/musicians, I love to spend time riding my bike, petting
my cute little dog, reading nonfiction, gigging (whoops, that's
cello-related), hanging out with my boyfriend, and thrift-store
shopping...I hope to be all finished with my MM by winter, and right
now my postings here will be kinda sporadic because I am preparing
my last master's recital. Nice to "meet" you all!
P.S. If any
of you are in CA (or surrounding states), read Paul's post in Cello
Chat about a possible ICS Cello Gathering in the near future!

Re:

You're in college. You can post
here. There's no such thing as too old! In my history lecture two
semesters ago, one of my classmates (possibly the most fun one, too)
was about 85 yrs old and was taking the class to ease her
boredom.
