SOMEBODY HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11
I don't have a lesson for a couple
weeks and my teacher set me loose on the Allemande from Bach's first
suite. I'm doing fine on the first half, but the second half has all
these weird-looking things and I can't figure out what they are. It
wouldn't be so bad, except they are all over the place. The first
one is in m.19 and it looks like this: There are two notes, an E,
then a C. There is a trill mark over the E, then between the E and
the C there is something that looks like a grace note on the D.
There is also a little "natural" sign above the trill marking. Am I
supposed to trill from E to F natural, then play a grace note, then
the C? Or am I supposed to trill down a note instead of up one, for
some strange reason? Any light anyone could shed on this would be
MUCH appreciated! Oh, by the way, I have the Gaillard edition of
the Bach Suites. For all I know, the weird things may not be in any
other editions--Gaillard kind of does his own thing
sometimes!

If i were you, I'd rush down to the
record store and get a copy of the CD of the bach suites. Do you not
already have it? I find listening to the work first quite helpful,
but don't get too much into the habit. :P however I'm sure the
professional cellists here will be able to help you..good
luck..

Listening to a record can help, but
what I would suggest is that you learn the piece without the trills
or grace notes and make sure all the rhythm is right, and then it
should be easy enough to put them in when you are sure how you
should play them. It is hard to unlearn them if you do them wrong
(by which, I mean a different way than your teacher likes to hear
them!)

Yes - Trill to F natural then play
grace note then the C. Barenreiter doesn't notate the F natural but
other editions do and that's usually how it's played.

Speaking of the Bach Suites, . . . . .
What do you all think is the easiest
movement in them as a whole? I bought a copy and want to play
something from it, but they are too hard for my ability right now,
so where should I start? Is there an "easiest" part?
Thanks.

(by the way, I also have the Gaillard
edition)

I think the Minuets of the 1st Suite
are quite easy - they might be a good place to start.
If
you're thinking of getting a recording, I highly recommend Mischa
Maisky's latest, which comes complete with a CD-ROM of the scores,
with the bowings and phrasings he uses. You can edit the scores and
there are also other gadgets like MIDI - it's great stuff!

I have Yo-Yo Ma playing them, but he
goes so fast that it's impossible to tell what he's doing!

I personally think the Prelude is
pretty easy. I'm sure there's a lot more depth to it than I get,
but... Good luck with Gaillard--he's a little weird sometimes, I had
to take a lot of white-out to his slurs. Watch out for m. 14 in the
first Allemande--the seventh note is supposed to be an A, not a B
(or at least it is in every other version, including the Magdalena).
And Lissey's right too, the Minuets aren't bad. Good luck!

Thank
you both.
I went downstairs to practice cello
after i posted that, and i just started looking through for a good
place to start. thought that the first Menuet from the first suite
looked pretty good, and started there. I can play the first part
pretty decently (to my amazement!) and the second part is, well,
definitely not par, but i'll get there. I also don't have lessons
for a few weeks (until after labor day) so maybe that will give ME
something to work on (in between marching band stuff). thanks.
