Who's
your favorite Cellist?
As a sort of side comment off Ewan
B's question ("what is your favorite cello piece") i'm wondering
which cello performers our your favorites. I'm not sure who's my
favorite- probably Rostopovich and Jackie Du Pre tied for first, and
then Yo Yo Ma in second. Who's your favorite? Steven

My
Favorite Cellist
this is going to sound strange, as i
know they're not "professional" cellists in the classical sense; but
i love the women from rasputina... they have such a lovely mystique
and i like the idea that they play all original material. with a
rock edge, no less!

ladies
of rasputina?
interesting, i've never heard of the
women of rasputina- do they have any recordings out or are they more
folky in their music style? Steven

fav
My favorite would have to be Yo-Yo
Ma. He is phenomenal! I know there are many other great cellists out
there. He puts in so much emotion. I can connect with him quite
easily! ~Mel

Re:

I wish I could've seen Jacqueline
du Pre play in person. That would've been awesome, there isn't a
word for how cool it would've been. After her, my favorite cellist
is Rostropovich. Has anybody ever noticed how humongous his hands
are? Not that this makes him a better cellist, I'm just pointing it
out. They're huge! They must come in handy. After that, I would say
Yo-Yo Ma. Honestly, I don't like a lot of his interpretations but
he's got an incredible sound. (Especially live, I saw him play the
Elgar this year and it was incredible!)I also love how he's recorded
such a variety of different types of music.

Greatness?
I don't really have a favorite
cellist, having not heard many, but I would like to say something
about how I think we should measure greatness. I think that
greatness comes through hard work, not genius. Let's take composers,
for example. While Mozart gave the world a ton of beautiful music, I
don't have the highest respect for him because he was a genius
(correct me if I'm wrong). But I have not heard or read anything
that said Bach was a genius, or prodigy, whatever. He just loved
music a lot. He may have had a lot of talent, but.... Anyways, I
think the same can apply to cellists. While I don't dislike Yo-Yo
Ma, with how relatively young he looks, he must have either had some
incredible talent or some mean, selfish parents who pushed, and
pushed and pushed him. Most likely it was a little of both. That's
my opinion, and I certainly don't dislike any of the "prodigies"
I've mentioned. Bye!
