What
other instruments do you play?
This was taken from Matthias' post
having to do with being able to maintain lessons and Lisa thought it
would be interesting to know what other instruments people play so
I'll start.
I started on accordion when I was five (stop
throwing tomatoes!!). When I was 7 I wanted to learn cello but was
unable to find when that was the proper size. When I was 9 I started
playing trombone and from there I started playing guitar, tuba and
baritone. In high school I marched with either a sousaphone or
trombone, whatever the band director wanted. I started cello about 3
years ago at age 32 and have since bought a clarinet to learn on
when I need a break from cello (so far, I haven't played the
clarinet much). Cello is my main focus and I haven't played any of
the others except guitar in quite some time.

I'll
bet no one else here plays the piano!
I started w/piano at age 7/8 (I
can't remember), and I'm so HAPPY I stayed w/it, even in those
difficult early whiny brat years. Some of my cello friends are just
starting piano now, to help them w/music theory, and they say it's
really frustrating, esp. when a lot of teens around you already play
so well. I took vocal lessons for one summer, but I never pursued a
choral career. Guitar would be my only other instrument, and I'm not
sure if it even qualifies, since I'm very, very bad. I hardly ever
practice guitar anymore - it's hard enough finding a decent
cello/piano balance. Happily, my piano teacher fully supports my
cello devotion.

any
piano majors who take cello as a 2nd instr.?
I started the piano at 5, earned
diplomas in piano performance in '98, cellist of almost 3 years. Are
there any other pianists who take cello as a 2nd instrument?

Re:

Thanks for starting this Zaraak! I
don't even now remember if I mentioned what other instruments are in
use at my house. I have played piano since I was 8 and flute since I
was 10, piccolo at 13(I'm 35 now). I will have played cello a year
in October. Both my daughters play piano, they are just starting. My
older daughter plays clarinet and just got back from Blue Lake Fine
Arts Camp. My husband messes with guitar and I've been eyeing it
myself. But I think the next instrument to come home will be a
violin. My older daughter (12) is wanting to try it.

What
other instruments do you play
Actively: none
started violin
at age 7 (with school) switched to cello (and occasionally
violin) at 11 and played until I was 14 and my weekend job
interfered too much (extra curricular through school didnt do
much other than 1st position and 4th on A string ... learned many
bad habits from teacher who was viola player).
started
euphonium tuba (baritone 3 or 4 valve) at age 12 and played until I
left high school at 18 (grade 13 in ontario).
learned alto
sax summer I was 13. (got relatively fluent wouldnt take much to
pick it up again). learned flute summer of 14 and 15 (reasonably
fluent at the time ... cant remeber any of it now .. looking to buy
a flute to play with on the side).
Over the years through
band learned to make my way through trumpet, trombone, french
horn ... when we needed more sound in that area. (though I did cheat
and transpose the trumpet music to the equivalent baritone music so
I wouldnt have to learn new fingerings to associate with a note).
I wish I had learned the piano.

other
instruments
Thanks for starting this post! I
started with music theory at age 5, piano at age 6 and pipe organ at
age 10. (I've been playing the piano ever since (I'm 26)I stopped
playing the organ 6 years ago... I don't have one to practice on
anymore) I tried the guitar when I was 18 but never really got
dedicated enough to get anywhere... I started the cello... only a
month ago... but this time I do have the dedication!
After I
finish my current degree, I do want to go back and get a degree in
music with piano as my major and cello as my second instrument...
well, that is if I get to be good enough at cello... but that won't
happen for another few years... sorry.

Played the guitar since age 16, I'm
43 now. Violin for one year (I found the scale of this instrument
too small for me), been at the cello for the last three years and
enjoying it very much. As a little feller, I used to bash my mothers
pots and pans in the basement, in leu of a drum set. Does that
count? At least my mother knew where I was! All in all, a pretty
unremarkable career, which pretty much descibes my
playing!!!!!!

Re:

I started violin when I was 9 years
old, in 1992! What a long time ago. Nearly 10 years ago (well, eight
maybe!) Most of the violinists I know who are my age have been
playing about 13 years, but then I've caught up. . .
I
started cello in 1997/1998. However it was just a fun thing (30
minutes practice a day, Suzuki Camps etc. . .) until last year when
I started proper lessons. Now it's serious (but fun )
I
also twiddle with the piano - I have decided that my pianistic goal
is to master Burgmuller's 25 Progressive Studies, and Mozart's
Twinkly Variations. . .
It is quite hard sqaushing all the
practice in, but I do my best. The thing is for cello is not to take
on too much new stuff at each lesson - and work really hard for the
2 hours I have for daily cello practice - that way I get more done
well.

Re:

Piano, badly.
I had to learn
when I went to college - there was a piano proficiency requirement
for all performance majors. I had never played any keyboard before
and being a beginner at 18 while trying to study cello seriously was
torture. At the end of each quarter we would have to play a jury for
our grade and to determine whether we had passed the proficiency
requirement. You signed up for any time slot you could manage during
finals week. It seemed that I always followed a graduate piano
performance major. I found those juries to be much more nerve
wracking than the string juries.
Once I left music school, I
also left the piano behind. But now I own one and my eldest child is
taking lessons. I can play what she can, but she'll probably pass me
soon.
I took up the violin when my kids started playing, not
as a serious study, but just so I could help them. I can't manage
the vibrato, but other than that I can play the heck out of that
little half size violin!

Lissey--Pipe organ?!?!?!?!?
Hello. I have recently started to
like pipe organ. I don't play, but I'm obsessed with them! What is
it like? Where do you go to play one? I'd love to try one someday,
but I don't know where there is one in my area. Just curious.
thanks.

Re:

Hi MusicKid! I don't know exactly
what to tell you, re pipe organ. It's a great instrument - part of
what I like about it is that it's so versatile. You can get a really
powerful sound, or a really mellow sound, or practically anything in
between. There's also lovely music, especially French Romantic
music. If you're interested in recordings, I'd recommend composers
like Vierne, Franck, Alain, and obviously Bach. Oh, and you
definitely have to listen to Saint-Saens' Organ Symphony - it's a
really beautiful piece of music (and there's a really nice cello
part as well).
Studying on a pipe organ isn't easy . It used
to be really difficult when I had to go to a church whenever I
wanted to study. I used to waste loads of time just going and
coming, plus there's the problem that you have to match your study
time to whatever happens to be going on in church. Then last year I
bought an electronic organ - it makes things so much easier. If you
seriously want to take up organ, I recommend getting an electronic
one to study on straight away. It was really difficult doing the
more advanced exams with no personal instrument to study on.
Do you play piano? If you play piano well, you'll find it
much easier to take up organ. In fact, if you don't play piano, I'd
suggest you take a couple of piano lessons first. With piano you
start getting the hang of coordinating 2 parts, so when you're faced
with 3 on the organ, you'll find it easier. I still had major
problems when I first started coordinating the left hand and pedal
parts - I always ended up playing the wrong parts with the wrong
hands. But that's just a matter of time and practice.
One
minor problem is sometimes finding the right shoes (this is probably
a greater problem for females). It takes a while to get used to the
idea that you can't wear just any shoes to play organ. But again,
that's something you get used to eventually. After all, even cello
has some dress restrictions - for example, narrow skirts!
I
can't think of anything else! If there's anything else you want to
know, don't hesitate to contact me. Hope I've been of some help.

Guitar, keyboards, drums, bass, and
I like to say accordian, but I can't actually play it although I
tried for a while when I was a kid. I originally wanted to be a pro
rock guitarist, but the cello took over at a certain point.
