Question for part-time/on the side cellists
I was wondering, is it difficult to facilitate both a life of cello and a life of a different profession?

Depends what you mean. I can play in my community orchestra loyally and have a full time job. I've been doing this for years. If you mean make money at it, too - there are others here who do some gigs but it's not their main source of income. This question or something like it is being answered in the other post called pro to ametuer.

It depends on what else you have going on in your non-work time, and how many hours you work. If you have three kids, a dog, and a vast honey-do list then, yes, it would be very difficult. But if all you do now is flop on the couch at night, crack open a cool one, and watch re-runs of Three's Company, no problem! :)

It boils down to priorities as well. If cello is high on your list of priorities, you will find the time.

Yes, it is possible do do both, you just need to remember that there are going to be times when your cello will have to take a back seat in your life. What matters is that you keep playing. Take advantage of as many opportunites to play as you and your family can handle and remember to have fun!

Re: Question for part-time/on the side cellists
It's all a matter of balance. I am fortunate to have a profession that allow me flexibility to play as needed. I miss occasional rehearsals due to work and family, but the orchestras I'm in understand (I'm in two. One I will have to give-up to spend more time with my son. Choosing which one is the hard part). The one I will probably stay with is a group of doctors, med. students and researchers. We all have demands on our time that we juggle and we all pull together at concert time.
I played in high school and part of college. I just recently started playing again after 25 years. I did not realize how much I missed it and the rust does not come off easily.

pnorris is correct. Play as much as you can, have fun, but don't ever stop.
