Large-scale choral works

By "Large-scale work" I simply mean any choral work longer than a single movement. I am including several fragments of works that were never completed (if it worked for Mozart...). Click on the titles below for a detailed description with MIDI files.

Liturgical works

 Missa Brevis (Fragment), 1981

A mass in the tradition of the short masses of Mozart and Haydn, but in English rather than Latin. I completed the first two movements.

Congregational Mass, 1992

A setting of the Mass for congregational singing.

Concert works

Magnificat, 1982

An a capella setting of the Latin Magnificat text.

Little Requiem (Fragment), 1982

The first two movements of an early version of the "Little Requiem", the final version of which was completed in 1993 (see below).

Choral Fanfares for Major Feast Days, 1992

A set of short anthems for major feast days.

The Nativity, 1993

A Christmas suite, written for four-part chorus with piano accompaniment and narrator.

Little Requiem, 1993

A Requiem Mass dedicated to the victims of child abuse.

Drei Weinachtslieder, 1993

An arrangement of three German Christmas songs.

Magnificat (with Laura Faulkner), 1995

A setting of the English translation of the Song of Mary.

Remembrances (with Laura Faulkner), 1995

Commissioned by the Austin Boy's Choir to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the end of World War II, it was an exploration of the child's point of view of this destructive conflict.

Children's Magnificat, 1996

A setting of the English Magnificat text for children's choir and handbells.

Der Segen des Herrn machet reich ohne Mühe, 2000

Reconstruction of a lost J.S. Bach cantata composed in 1725, using the surviving text.

Works in progress

Gloria, 1996

A large-scale work for chorus and orchestra. When completed, it will make use of complicated rhythmic patterns, mixing simple and compound meters.

Mass in the Spirit of Palestrina, 1997

An a capella setting of the Latin Mass as Palestrina would have written it if he had been me instead of him. (The title says "Spirit" instead of "Style" because Palestrina's style is not strictly followed in this work, merely hinted at.)

Exsultate Deo, 1998

Cantata for choir, brass, and organ.

Lost Cantatas of Bach, 2000

Reconstruction of several lost J.S. Bach cantatas, the first of which is listed above.

Requiem for the Towers

Working title of a memorial work for the victims of September 11, 2001.  It would be unthinkable, as a composer, not to respond to this tragedy in some way.

Scrapped works

Missa Grandis (1980)

The Missa Grandis was supposed to be a great mass in the tradition of Bach's Mass in B Minor, Mozart's Great Mass In C Minor, and Beethoven's Missa Solemnis. It was in the old-fashioned, extended cantata form, like Bach's and Mozart's masses. This is another one for which I wrote numerous sketches. In fact, I completed a preliminary score for the "Gratias Agimus Tibi", in hopes that my high school choir director would have us sing it. We might have, if my manuscript were legible.

MIDI samples are from the Kyrie and Gratias Agimus Tibi, respectively.
