Bedrich Smetana(1824-1884)
Bedrich Smetana was born in Litomysl, Czechoslovakia. AN important national figure, he fonded a school of music in Prague and became the director of the national theatre in 1866, the year that his hugely successful comic opera The Bartered Bride was premiered. Despite of becoming deaf in 1874, he continued to compose, producing works such as the cycle of 6 symbolic poems My Country 1874-1879, but eventually he ended his life in an asylum.
