Appleton Water Tower
Reviews:
(Provided by Hugo and Cindy,
Cambridge) ....We were a little disappointed with the location here in terms of nearby
pubs and shops, essentially, and the kitchen was rather cold. But the
building itself is magnificent, and once we got a fire going in the living
room cum main bedroom it was toasty and lovely. The 2nd bathroom on the
upper floor is delightful, the windows narrow at floor level on that
storey, so you can lie low in the bath looking down on the countryside.
The cast-iron tank on the top - the building's raison d'etre - is
accessible and fascinating to climb down inside, a ladder is provided - see
the three truly immense ballcocks that used to regulate the water! Views
from the roof are great, you can see the distant Wash as advertised. The
surroundings include a disused limekiln and icehouse, both in poor repair
but showing some signs of renovation, and a little further afield a very
ruined, very old church, with a round tower of flint surviving. All signs
of the steam pump house which used to send water up into the tank from a
quarter mile away are gone, sadly. There's little else within strolling
distance.
7/10 - dull location, we like a pub or two within walking distance.
