Crownhill Fort
Reviews:
(Provided by Jane Curry) ....Crownhill Fort -
Nothing had prepared us for the sheer scale of Crownhill! You stay in
the officers quarters and you can see the layout in the Landmark Trust
Handbook, but it isn't obvious that the main corridor is 119 feet long!
Take some good thick socks so you can have fun sliding down the
corridor.
The other thing that took our breath away was the size of the rest of
the fort. It's open to the public from Spring through to Autumn but
when they bolt the gate and leave at 5:30, it's all yours. Make sure
you take plenty of torches and candles. It takes at least 45 minutes to
explore the main passageways - we were there over Halloween so we took
pumpkin lanterns down around the tunnels. As is usual with Landmark
forts, you have access to the flag to do the honours morning and
evening.
If you can, book Crownhill on a "firing weekend". This is a fort with
around 30 working cannon of which they fire a couple about once a month
- checkout the Crownhill Fort website - crownhillfort.co.uk - for firing
weekends. The gun crew are absolutely fantastic. We met up with them
early on Saturday morning and were committed "groupies" all weekend.
