The Steward's House
Reviews:
(Provided by Sexton Blake) ....The interior is very spacious for two people - a big living/dining room
with a gas fire, with views of a quiet street and the accountants office
over the road, tiny kitchen, a huge landing and comfortable bedroom. There
isn't much else to say about the interior, really. Comfortable, but not
much to write home about. The caretaker took the trouble to get in a local
paper and a monthly 'whats on' guide from the tourist office - very
impressive. The real joy of this place is its location - right in the
middle of Oxford, well away from traffic and attached to the Union. As a
landmark visitor, for a few quid you can join the Union temporarily and go
to debates, play snooker, use the fantastic library and drink beer for £1 a
pint, and pretend to be an Oxford student for a few days whatever your age.
Otherwise don't worry - it is quiet most evenings and the bar shuts at 11
anyway. I would strongly recommend that you go in term-time to enjoy the
union debates etc. During the week is the most interesting - Wednesdays
there is usually a famous visiting speaker, Thursdays a big debate. Another
good Autumn/Spring option, outside the major tourist season when Oxford is
heaving. Please note that this attached to a student union!!! If there is a
big event, it will happen outside your window. You might want check if you
are going on a ball night. Ring up the Oxford Union. The flat on its own -
OK, nice place to stay in Oxford, but so what 6/10. If you view this a
totally unique opportunity to experience Oxford life and spend some time in
the Union I would rate this 10/10.
