Jules Levy

Jules Levy was born in 1930 in Thessaloniki. His father was a Bulgarian architect. In 1939 the family immigrated into Bulgaria. Even at an early age he showed a strong affecfion for music which was further inspired by the atmosphere at home. The war put an end to his systematic schooling but not to his musical education. Since 1944 he has been seriously engaged in studying theory of music and playing various instruments. In 1959 he graduated from the Sofia Academy of Music, speciality "composition and conductorship", in the masterclass of the eminent composer Vesselin Stoyanov.

He has written many symphonic works (two divertissements for flute and orchestra, violin concerto, symphonic poems, etc.), four symphonies (the fourth for wind orchestra), two operas, 10 musical comedies, one ballet, many vocal and chamber music works as well as music for wind orchestra and has established the "Theatrical Collegium" and the "Simhah" Chamber Collegium.

For many years he has been conductor general at the Musical Theatre in Sofia and has been invited as an honoured guest to conduct concerts in Germany, Italy, The Czech Republic, Russia , Slovakia, Romania , etc.
